I like this idea for a Mastodon client a lot. Chrono streams are OK but not really optimal.

"What if your Timeline looked like iMessage. A normal timeline confuses me to no end because everything is out of context."

"My experiment, Ebou, is a Mastodon client that looks like iMessage. Conversations are grouped by friends and sorted by recent postings."

it’s unfortunate the name Webb doesn’t represent “the best of our humanity”
It would have been better to acknowledge the widespread call to pick a more suitable name pre-flight. The scientific value of the poorly named mission is nonetheless enormous. I do enjoy reading about the vast quantity of information being collected.

Art in dialogue with biotech

Oran Catts expressed some surprise at #Biosummit that in a past Biofrabricate event he saw that his Victimless Leather project was cited as seminal to the field of #CellularAgriculture. The project was an agitation to discuss how #technology should be used, yet in some circles had been seen as a proof of concept.

I'm reminded of old news from New Harvest when they shifted their mission to make explicit that #values are embedded in tech

"More research can help guide that implementation by showing, among other things, how alternatives to rye – the most commonly used cover crop in the U.S. Corn Belt – might result in higher primary crop yields in some regions"

Using #Landsat data, the team also identified fields using cover crops. They found that, from 2011 to 2021, the area where cover crops were planted increased from 1.8% to 7.2%.
#NASAEarth

The team then calculated the yield of farms planting cover crops, and used machine learning to compare those fields to similar ones without. Almost all farmers using cover crops for 3+ years saw reduced yields compared to those who let the soil lay bare. go.nasa.gov/3XLwUGj

On my daily dog walk, I coincidentally stumbled upon a “stolperstein” today, one of these cobble stones set in the ground where a victim of the holocaust used to live. I don’t know how I could have missed it before as I have been taking the same route every day for months. I have therefore added my name to Alice’s on the IRemember Wall.

This is interesting and might be relevant for bloom-ending processes in #phytoplankton. Roseobacter can coexist with Emiliania huxleyi (and important bloom forming coccolithophore important to carbon cycling), providing vitamins for ready supplies of sugar and amino acids. However when an algal cell is dying they bacteria can collect additional compounds and leave in search other other hosts. #algae #oceanography
