I believe I found some Haematococcus pluvialis in my birdbath, which apparently is where they commonly occur due to the high sunlight. The red astaxanthin pigments are UV protective. It looked like the rotifers were preferentially eating them.

Any idea what this algae or plant is? It forms green films on top if a nearby pond. Under the scope it forms largish clumps or sacks of cells- maybe 50-100 um or so across. Seems too large for most algae and too small for plants like duckweed. I've never come across it before, and I'd be curious to get an ID if anyone knew!

We found a really cool giant virus inside the genome of a green alga, and it has a very strange infection cycle that is hard to detect.

There are reports going back decades of viral particles spontaneously appearing in pure cultures of green algae, so this phenomenon seems quite common but mostly overlooked.

My at-home algal cultivation hobby is going well. I am surprised thst soil samples are the best for growing new green algae - more so than pond water.

Not the best quality but always nice to see microbial life in the pond. Maybe one is a ciliate with endosymbiotic algae?

Follow the leader: A new study of #flagella in #algae reveals how they coordinate their movements to ensure cells steer efficiently elifesciences.org/digests/8610… #protists #microbes

The younger flagellum sets the beat for #Chlamydomonas reinhardtii elifesciences.org/articles/861…

"To steer, C. reinhardtii adjusts the strength of the strokes made by each flagellum. Despite this asymmetry, the flagella must continue to beat in synchrony to move efficiently."

Two lifeforms merge in once-in-a-billion-years #evolutionary event
Scientists have caught a once-in-a-billion-years evolutionary event in progress, as two lifeforms have merged into one organism that boasts abilities its peers would envy. Last time this happened, Earth got plants. The #algae Braarudosphaera bigelowii has been found to have absorbed a #cyanobacteria called UCYN-A, which may be a huge step forward for #evolution.

Marine #microorganisms are crucial for #ocean health.

#Bacteria, #archaea, #fungi, #algae and #viruses make up most of the biomass in the seas and form the base of marine food webs.

They support nutrient cycling and drive crucial biogeochemical processes, including key steps in the carbon, nitrogen and silicon cycles.

Ocean modelling must evolve to take their biological complexity into account.

This is interesting and might be relevant for bloom-ending processes in #phytoplankton. Roseobacter can coexist with Emiliania huxleyi (and important bloom forming coccolithophore important to carbon cycling), providing vitamins for ready supplies of sugar and amino acids. However when an algal cell is dying they bacteria can collect additional compounds and leave in search other other hosts. #algae #oceanography
