Viruses that roam the fungal kingdom knowablemagazine.org/content/a…

"today, scientists researching fungal #viruses are enjoying a golden age of discovery... finding all sorts of weird and wonderful interactions between #fungi and their viruses and even between fungal viruses and #plants or #animals. Most fungal viruses don’t seem to do much of anything to their hosts, but others cause sickness or offer surprising benefits."

#Scientists described about 1.5mil #species on Earth 🌍 How many still remain undiscovered? 🧐 We may not get the chance to know 50 million species of #animals, #plants and #fungi! Take action #Boycottpalmoil #Boycott4Wildlife

500,000 Taxa on iNaturalist! inaturalist.org/blog/103155-50…

"that’s 23% of all known species on Earth... #Birds stand out: nearly all species have been observed on #iNaturalist. 349 species (2%) are yet to be recorded... For #reptiles, #amphibians, & #mammals there are about 10x as many unobserved... Like birds, most unobserved species only remain in tropical regions. This is not the case for #fish, #plants, #invertebrates, & #fungi where there are still many left to observe in all parts of the globe"

A pair of "Shaggy Mane" on a customers lawn today.

Some material experiments with mycelium substrate growing in sawdust and flour, to make fungi sculptures from moulds.

I am using a proprietary mix from the Dutch company Kineco kineco.bio/, although I know I can potentially make this myself with some spores and sawdust.

Will report back in about 7 days with whatever comes of these.

Do you know MediaDive, the world’s largest collection of cultivation media for microorganisms 🧫? It contains detailed introductions how to prepare the medium you need for your strain. In addition to the provision of all media used at the DSMZ, you can also create your own media or search for a medium suitable for your strain. Give it a try 😉

Marine #microorganisms are crucial for #ocean health.

#Bacteria, #archaea, #fungi, #algae and #viruses make up most of the biomass in the seas and form the base of marine food webs.

They support nutrient cycling and drive crucial biogeochemical processes, including key steps in the carbon, nitrogen and silicon cycles.

Ocean modelling must evolve to take their biological complexity into account.
