Purpur-Knabenkraut, am Vercors-Westrand recht exponiert auf einer Weide stehend. Die Pflanzen sind empfindlich, was Spätfröste während der Blüte angeht und stehen daher gern etwas geschützter im Gebüsch.

Yosemite Falls from the valley. The trees were crawling with Steller's jays, who predictably all hid from me 😄 #california #nature

I hadn't been to Vernal Fall before. Predictably, the scale was impressive! #california #nature

We'd spent a few days in the Yolla Bolly-Middle Eel Wilderness, and animals were surprisingly rare – having likely moved to lower elevations. This lil' one did swing by to brighten up the place. #california #nature

Threats to conservation from artificial-intelligence-generated wildlife images and videos

"Three distinctive characteristics of contemporary society can exacerbate this issue: the pervasive use of social media, anthropomorphizing of animal behavior, and disconnection from nature."

Every time I cross Sentinel Bridge I'm like "I think we as a people probably don't need more pictures from Sentinel Bridge." Then it's so pretty I go "well, I'll take a picture anyway". So there! #california #nature #anotherone

A Steller's Jay actually held still long enough to take a picture! This rarely happens around me. I emit anti-Stationary Steller's Jay energy #california #nature

Samhain [sow-wen]: the ancient Celtic festival that marks the end of summer and the beginning of winter — the moment when Beira the Cailleach, Queen of Winter, regains control over the landscape from the Queen of Summer, Brigid. It also marks the moment when the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest and the origins of Halloween. Mountain spirits come to the fore at this time of year.

Hidden inside every growing hypha lies a microscopic powerhouse — the #Spitzenkörper.
It’s not just a blob at the fungal tip — it’s the traffic controller, architect, and GPS of fungal growth. 🍄

Pardon my over-posting today, but I just wanted to share this beautiful visitor at home on this last day (somewhere already) of summer.

Happy #WorldPhotographyDay !

This is one of my favourite images from last autumn in Scotland's Ancient Caledonian Forest. In the dark of morning, I hiked up this pathless steep sided hill to gain a view over the magnificent glen beyond and was treated to an exceptional sunrise. Amazing to see all these regenerating pine saplings growing on the higher slopes.

This monarch, a skipper, & some bumblebees were enjoying the zinnias Thursday. Seen monarchs around the garden nearly every day now. They seem to especially like the zinnias, the most abundant large flower in the garden right now.

These are the beautiful spore-producing structures of plasmodial slime molds. Which is your favourite colour?

Originally considered Fungi, these Myxomycetes are now classed as Amoebozoans - single celled organisms with thousands of nuclei... not animals or fungi but something else entirely!

Are there any #beetle specialists in the #fediverse? Had this in the moth box this morning. At least 4cm long (measured at 4, possibly 4.2cm) App says King Diving Beetle but they're quite rare round here. More likely Great, but I see gold edge rather than yellow and seems too big. Grateful for any assistance
