We'd gone to a weekend-long training to be Winter Wildlife Docents at Pt. Reyes. The training was a little less helpful than hoped, but on the bright side it let out at just the right time to see the sun set behind the Pacific. Can't complain. #california #nature

A lil' peaceful bend in the Merced River. There was some kind of animal bonking around on the other shore, which was fun to hear -- we never did see what it was. The cadence didn't feel human. But, maybe it was just a birder taking their time! #california #nature

Tallac had received a dusting of snow as of a couple of days ago, so I'm glad I'd gone to see the season change -- the area will be absolutely walloped by snow this weekend, so some of autumn's remainders will likely disappear. Until next time. #california #nature

Steller's Jays have been my white whale for years now. I see plenty of them, but every time I try to take a picture of one it's some combination of dark, blurry, the bird flew away, I was hallucinating it, birds were never real, etc. So these are certainly some of the least interesting Steller's Jay's pictures on the internet, but dangit: I finally got one 😁 #california #nature

The Merced River winds through the hills just about where the South Fork comes in from Hite Cove and joins it. It felt quite smoky, but there aren't any big fires in the area; I almost wonder if it was an odd soup of USFS prescribed burns and general Central Valley schmutz, but there was just so much in the evenings... #california #nature

Two ravens had set up a "tollbooth" where roadwork had necessitated the closure of one lane of traffic. Lights stopped traffic flowing in one direction, at which point the ravens swooped down from the lightpost and hopped down the line of cars peering in the driver's side window, asking for snacks. If time allowed, they would then proceed up the passenger side. An inventive scheme! This is one of the two. #california #nature

Misty day in the valley yesterday, but higher up, a dopamine rush of bright sun & mind-sharpening blue.

Bonus: the meteorological weirdness of fast-moving cloud hugging close to Fountains Fell; autumn grasses in tarnished golds; scattered flocks of sheep and plover; the local farmer on his buggy, old sheepdog riding pillion.

Headed back revived.

The European Space Agency's Euclid space telescope is assembling the largest 3D map of the universe ever made.

The first section is now complete. Take a look at what happens when you zoom in...

I know it's fall but I looked back at some midsummer photos of this Anna's Hummingbird working some beebalm flowers in our front yard. Well, the flowers have all faded now, but the Anna's stay with us all winter. #photography #nature #naturephotography #birdphotography #hummingbird #birds #flowers

Computer models designed to simulate slime molds (left) turn out to be exceptionally good at simulating the large-scale structure of the universe (right).

Similar network patterns appear across scales differing by 30 orders of magnitude!

A newly discovered bacterium, Uabimicrobium helgolandensis, eats other bacteria and is a kind of 'bacteria of prey,' that should not even exist based on previous concepts about microbial cells. It could be a kind of microbial missing link, researchers suggest.

#News: Scientists have discovered that the serrated edges of Komodo #dragons' teeth are tipped with iron. The study gives new insight into how Komodo dragons keep their teeth razor-sharp and may provide clues to how dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex killed and ate their prey. #lizards #nature #animals #Boycott4Wildlife https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2024/07/240724123055.htm

A team of scientists from the University of Bristol recently released research that pushed the date of our Last Universal Common Ancestor (LUCA) back to about 4.2 billion years ago.

This suggests that the life that is in each of us, and in each of the organisms that make up our very large extended family, runs in an unbroken chain backward for 4.2 billion years.

That’s a pretty considerable investment by the universe in every living thing.

Perhaps we should reflect on that a little more as we continue to muck around on this planet.

It might be time to start fitting in.

Twenty minutes of fireflies in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, near the famous Elkmont campground. The yellow sparkles are Photinus carolinus, the synchronous fireflies that have become a tourism sensation, and the greenish trails are the more enigmatic "blue ghost" Phausis reticulata.

#Road building almost always precedes #forest loss, and road density is by far the strongest correlate of #deforestation out of 38 #biophysical and #socioeconomic factors.
Findings of the study imply that the most vital #conservation function of protected areas is limiting roads and road-related environmental disruption. They suggest that burgeoning, poorly studied ghost roads are among the gravest of all direct #threats to #tropical forests.

Fossil stingray (Cyclobatis sp.)
Upper Cretaceous. Approximately 100.5 million to 66 million years ago. When alive, this creature lived in warm, shallow seas and had a very short tail, which was fitted with a venomous stinger. Discovered in Haqil, Byblos, Lebanon. It just happens to look like an ancient space alien. #science #fossil #archeology #evolution #photo #nature #biology #wildlife
