Looking west from the High Peaks in Pinnacles Nat'l Park. #california #nature

The sun creeping in! The whole Central Valley has been under an unrelenting tule fog for like three weeks now. We'd taken a trip up to the Sierra foothills just to get some sun. The trail we'd picked was right where the fog ended, so we got to appreciate it getting burned off 😀 #california #nature

We were lucky enough to see a family of raccoons shove themselves a hollow tree. #california #nature

Bear Gulch Reservoir was quite pretty -- made better as all these tiny little birds were swarming (presumably hopeful for lost food, as I think a lot of hikers pause there for a snack). #california #nature

Somehow Pinnacles maintains the ability to inspire borderline heatstroke despite the December cool. I can't imagine what it's like in July. I did enjoy this big rock that looked like some sort of giant landing craft, though. #california #nature

Beautiful winter weather here in the mountains of Virginia #Appalachia #nature

We'd run into this gang of otters on the Drake's Head trail. They just swam up and started having a nice time. Lovely! #california #nature

Threats to conservation from artificial-intelligence-generated wildlife images and videos

"Three distinctive characteristics of contemporary society can exacerbate this issue: the pervasive use of social media, anthropomorphizing of animal behavior, and disconnection from nature."

Samhain [sow-wen]: the ancient Celtic festival that marks the end of summer and the beginning of winter — the moment when Beira the Cailleach, Queen of Winter, regains control over the landscape from the Queen of Summer, Brigid. It also marks the moment when the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest and the origins of Halloween. Mountain spirits come to the fore at this time of year.

Hidden inside every growing hypha lies a microscopic powerhouse — the #Spitzenkörper.
It’s not just a blob at the fungal tip — it’s the traffic controller, architect, and GPS of fungal growth. 🍄
This video will uncover how this mysterious vesicle cluster orchestrates the very architecture of life beneath our feet.

Pardon my over-posting today, but I just wanted to share this beautiful visitor at home on this last day (somewhere already) of summer.

Happy #WorldPhotographyDay !

This is one of my favourite images from last autumn in Scotland's Ancient Caledonian Forest. In the dark of morning, I hiked up this pathless steep sided hill to gain a view over the magnificent glen beyond and was treated to an exceptional sunrise. Amazing to see all these regenerating pine saplings growing on the higher slopes.

This monarch, a skipper, & some bumblebees were enjoying the zinnias Thursday. Seen monarchs around the garden nearly every day now. They seem to especially like the zinnias, the most abundant large flower in the garden right now.

At an event celebrating the 100th anniversary of quantum mechanics, physicists were polled on their view of quantum theory.

Their wildly divergent answers illustrate the difference between observation and interpretation.

These are the beautiful spore-producing structures of plasmodial slime molds. Which is your favourite colour?

Originally considered Fungi, these Myxomycetes are now classed as Amoebozoans - single celled organisms with thousands of nuclei... not animals or fungi but something else entirely!

Are there any #beetle specialists in the #fediverse? Had this in the moth box this morning. At least 4cm long (measured at 4, possibly 4.2cm) App says King Diving Beetle but they're quite rare round here. More likely Great, but I see gold edge rather than yellow and seems too big. Grateful for any assistance

Edit - location: Hastings, UK
