Peertube is pretty great, although I'm not sure if it's content creator ready yet, given there isn't a direct path to video monetization. Unlike microblogging social media, many people make content creation their full time job because of the monetization YouTube can offer

how could they do monetization without ads or just letting people link to a sus donation site (e.g. Patreon)?

Sponsors like they currently do, memberships either their instance or to their account.

unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to ensure anonymity in the payment process that isn't going to be immediately labeled as "scammy". I would rather not doxx or deadname myself to whatever federated membership service is devised. Sponsorships might be the best bet for the time-being then.

that being said, if there is a way to integrate anonymous payments into the fediverse, I would support the adoption of it. These are definitely the kind of conversations that need to be had.
