I'm wandering around in an area that is littered with abandoned mine shafts. I'm always amazed at the combination of optimism and desperation that must have been required for a person go out in the desert, stake a claim, and dig a deep hole in rock with hand tools hoping to find something valuable.

i remember seeing lots of these hiking around as a kid outside Tucson. Watch your step! Also a great place to look for snakes.
