I don't divide a year into four seasons, instead I notice the change through blossoms. The blossoms don't follow a chronological order. They overlap, reverse, even repeat sometimes. Each mountainside has its own climate. The rocks can be burning hot on one side and covered with snow on the other. Here are the blossoms of a climate that's warming up:
1. Crocus time is cool and crispy. The blossoms can poke directly from the snow.
2. Primroses come after crocuses, although sometimes they meet each other on the same slope. Then crocuses dissolve while primroses stay. The air is warmer and it smells of soil and plants.
3. Anemone time means you can be confident it's warm on their field. You might need sunscreen, and even look for shadows to chill in.
4. Hyacinths arrive when you start keeping the solar zenith in mind, and making sure you've got your cap on. The bees are everywhere, and the air is so sweet that you want to eat it with a spoon.

I'm wandering around in an area that is littered with abandoned mine shafts. I'm always amazed at the combination of optimism and desperation that must have been required for a person go out in the desert, stake a claim, and dig a deep hole in rock with hand tools hoping to find something valuable.

It's bank holiday here in Spain so we knew many of the popular walks would be busy. Instead we drove 15 minutes to a town called Chite, which we had never visited before. Had beautiful hike through lush forests and lakeside (Embalse de Beznar). A glorious 2 hour, 7km circular walk that ended at the bar in Chite.

Amazing what's on your doorstep that can sometimes get overlooked!

Any other parents of young kids out there who like to hike / bike / ski / camp?

For us 2023 was the year of learning how to do it with a toddler while keeping him safe, comfortable, and happy.

And it went pretty well, overall. 🙂

In 2024, though, we'll have a new baby, as well...

Any tips, tricks or advice you've got on trip planning & execution with TWO young kids would be welcome!

About this event

Come hang out with folks associated with DWeb principles in New York City. This month we're being hosted at Blackbird Infoshop in Kingston, NY.

We will have a presentation on peer-to-peer technology and mapping by Mauve (github) followed by a hike in the Hudson River Valley.

Mauve is an Occult Enby that's making local-first software with peer to peer protocols, mesh networks, and the web.

Mapping has long been a tool of coercion and control, let's take back our geography!

(We will stream the non-hike portion via https://chat.celehner.com/group/cchat)

How to get to Kingston via mass transit

Via Trailways bus from NYC port authority: trailways.com/schedules/bus-fr…

Via MetroNorth from NYC's Grand Central Station

From either of these locations, you will need a lift to Blackbird. Please contact the coordinators. There are rides available.

Once upon a time, in the Styrian Alps, I hiked up a mountain in the early morning darkness to photograph the sunrise. That was almost three years ago now, October 2019.

I've posted a few edits of this before, but this is the original that I haven't shown like this before. Unfortunately I don't have the RAW files anymore, so I can't edit it again by today's standards and technical possibilities.
