Shutdown of mastodon.au instance is imminent (a.k.a., three months)!

And mastodon.au admin @mb cites “lack of assistance from @Gargron” as the deciding factor.

I’m investigating further.

Please migrate to another instance as soon as you can!

@mb@mastodon.au Lack of assistance from @Gargron has made the decision easy for us to shutdown mastodon.au in 3 months (16 May 2023). Unfortunately when you can’t get any response after a week it’s clear there is no future for individual instances to operate. The requests was by email and direct messages on mastodon, but no reply. Apologies to everyone who uses mastodon.au.

First, mastodon.lol, now mastodon.au.

Thankfully, migration is an option.

But people are soon going to question volunteer-run instances.

I run more than one volunteer instance. I want volunteerism to succeed.

But I also think it’s vulnerable to the admins’ change in moods.

Too many admins shut down their instance because they’re having a bad day.

I was wondering if the influx of new users and subsequent headaches associated with their maintenance (requests for changes, moderation, etc) made shut-down easier than dealing with the issues. The cost benefit balance of volunteering no longer made sense.

Between #Mastodonau & #Mastodonlol, it's a good thing #Mastodon gGmbH has put an end to using Mastodon in new domain names without explicit licensing.

The tech media will be having a field day with this soon

I wonder how many other significant instances are ran by people with personality trait issues &their users &their content is at the whims of unreasonable people, not suited for the responsibilities and sensibilities required.
