Lmao: so with Proton on Linux / Steam Deck, if you swapped a game between Proton versions it would likely say to Unity thereโ€™s been multiple installs ๐Ÿ’€

Denuvo trips up on that issue too. Disaster.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

definitely had the denuvo thing near P4G's release when I was trying to get the game to work without random crashes... hate DRM on legitimately purchased software, hate what Unity is doing. Shit like this only hurts legitimate customers and now also indie game devs, while pirates rip that shit out and don't give a damn either way.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

So wait, if we wanted to run up the bills for any developer using Unity, we could just buy a single copy of one of their games, then set up some computers to repeatedly uninstall and reinstall the game?

It's like they're not even thinking of basic security on this one...

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

thatโ€™s insane! I donโ€™t do it often, but if I have any issues with a game Iโ€™ll explore different Proton versions. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ this model is moronic.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

This is a joke to be clear
its a good incentive for developers to offer a native linux version ๐Ÿ™ƒ
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

This is supreme bullshit. I have 2 Decks, an Ally, a gaming laptop, a desktop, and some various other machines in various states of put together. I dual boot several of them between Linux and Windows. I shouldn't be costing devs stupid amounts of money because I like experimenting with hardware. What about reviewers who change hardware daily? So ridiculous!
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

What would happen with a steam library on external storage that you switch between two devices? Would it count as two, one or a new install every time you run it after switching systems?
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

Image description:
Stephen Totilo @stephentotilo
I got some clarifications from Unity regarding their plan to charge developers per game install (after clearing thresholds)
- If a player deletes a game and re-installs it, that's 2 installs, 2 charges
- Same if they install on 2 devices
- Charity games/bundles exempted from fees
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

Haha, if that's confirmed that's messed up man.

Silver-lining: More Godot users > more Godot tutorials being made for smooth brains like me who has several false starts to get into it as a hobby.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

this is some short sighted malarkey. Who is going to use Unity with this clause now instead of Godot (or Unreal)?
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

turning a big dial that says "Fees" on it and constantly looking back at the audience for approval like a contestant on The Price is Right
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

time for more people to learn Godot and/or unreal.(and/or whatever other engineers are in the up and coming)
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

I guess the reason for this nonsense is in the statement from unity: "We looked for ways to lessen the impact on developers, and provide ways to bring the Runtime fee to zero. If youโ€™re using any of our ad products, Unity Gaming Services or cloud services, etc. please contact us to discuss discounts."

They basically want that every game is an ad-infested, user-tracking, always-on hellhole.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

This absurdity is worthy of a lawsuit. As others noted, there are many ways this can be trivially abused. As much as I gripe about Unreal sometimes, this is flat-out developer-hostile.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

Christ, Unity's been going downhill ever since that Riccitiello guy took over. Dude's the same one who made screwed-up decisions at EA.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

So in theory one could write a bash script that can totally bankrupt a developer? That will surely never get abused.
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

This can't be real. I seriously, unironically think there is a miscommunication or someone is trolling ๐Ÿ™
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

so I could theoretically bankrupt someone by throwing a script together to continually install, run the game for a minute, delete and reinstall again?

Get a VM farm going and you don't even need ransomware, just phone up a Dev and demand payment or you start the process.

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

well, I'm guessing we're going to see a bunch more Unreal Engine games now, which isn't a bad thing. As great as Unity has been, the "Unity bounce" is a killer in some games
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

what in the actual fuck? Guess our โ€œdelete and reinstallโ€ response to fix most issues will now cost us lol #notfunnythough
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

Funnyโ€”in the same week that Spotify had to say โ€œno, we donโ€™t pay out the wazoo if you stream the same song over and over,โ€ Unity goes โ€œbut now that you mention itโ€ฆโ€
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

On my 470th un/reinstall of a game by a developer i dont like

Ive writted a script to automate it and planning on leaving it on all weekend

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

This is why we should have embraced torrenting more rather than this nonsense torrenting is free and hosted be the playerbase.

Edit: The reason for these fees is because when you host a file (for example a game) that file is stored on a server (this has a reoccurring cost of the electricity and the cost every time you download the file for network costs) when you host a file as a torrent the people who download the file act as a server therefore it has no cost.

@bastetfurry they're YEARS behind, they should just make a subscription based model as everyone else.

"wanna play ad-free with Unity Zero? SUBSCRIBE HERE"

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

gosh, where do these business administration people always get ideas that are not only greedy beyond what should be socially acceptable, but which are also sure to tank their business model as a whole?
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

with such limited storage on some devices... I wonder how many people are constantly rotating 1-2 app slots on a weekly/monthly basis
in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

they will pedal back but this shifts the overton window towards accepting a model close to this

I've read that Unity merged with ironSource a year or so ago, a software-monetization company - so probably any Unity runtime built in the last year (at least) supports this

in reply to Liam @ GamingOnLinux ๐Ÿง๐ŸŽฎ

so if you want to screw with a competitor, just buy their game and continuously install/delete/reinstall it?
