It still means you paid Microsoft for the included Windows license and it sucks. Blank or linux-preinstalled new hardware is still to rare unfortunately 🙁 I know Tuxedo on the top of my mind, with small independent shops here and there maybe, but that's it. Even LDLC (a french seller) does not offer Linux on configurable new machines and has barely any blank/Linux machines in catalogue.
well, not quite a 'new' laptop. Has to have a few years so the kernel drivers exists. But once that's done, linux more than doubles the life-span of a computers.
Had to buy a new work laptop and wanted my boss to save the 80$ on the Windows license as I had no intention of using it. Unfortunately boss insisted on paying that premium...for nothing.
Some new laptops are struggling with Linux and new graphics cards.
Took me months to discuss software with a developer while trying to make it play nice with Linux for it to buck me off of it all because of a graphics driver and spanking new motherboard.
Linux still has some work to do. Kde plasma isn’t working at par yet to let go of windows.
I really really wanted this to work but we aren’t here yet.
Had the pleasure of doing this a couple of days ago on a new (to me) Dell Latitude. Nuked Windows and installed Debian Trixie on first boot.
Linux isn't perfect, but it's gotten better and better over the last 15 years that I've been a user, while Windows (which I use at work) has morphed from an okay-ish OS to a dumpster fire.
I buy my laptops off of Ebay. If you buy something 2 or 3 years old, it is almost guaranteed to run Linux without hassle. I also skip most of the depreciation. They still run quite fast without the Windows bloat.
