Mary Anning was born in 1799 in Great Britain. Her family lived in poverty, selling fossils to make ends meet.

Scientists of Anning’s day could not believe that a poor young woman could posses her knowledge & talent. She has been described as 'the greatest fossilist the world ever knew' yet many are still unaware of her incredible contributions.

The majority of her discoveries ended up in museums & collections without credit. https://ucmp.berkeley.edu/history/anning.html #history #science #HistoryRemix

My 15 yo son has been researching our family tree.

Turns out Mary Anning's grandfather is one of our direct ancestors!

I only know about Mary Anning because of the wonderful Kate Winslet film, Ammonite. I’m sure the fim makers took some liberties, as they always do, but her story was still inspirational and incredible.

there is an excellent novel about her called Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier. Her story is amazing.

I'm not sure about her level of obscurity. In my local library, in the 1970's Mary Anning was in all the "Dinosaur" books that I devoured.

Household name, maybe not. Well known amongst small children with a passion for paleontology, fossils and dinosaurs, unavoidable!

By the way, I believe Deborah McGuiness character in “Red Dead Redemption 2” game based on Mary Anning
