Born in 1896, Ida Noddack was the first scientist to suggest the principle behind nuclear fission. But Otto Hahn demonstrated this (with Lise Meitner! & Fritz Strassmann) & he won the Nobel prize.

Noddack also discovered rhenium (atomic #75) & predicted #43, but couldn’t confirm it experimentally, so Segrè & Perrier were later credited.

She tried to speak up that the ideas for fission & #43 began with her, but it lost her credibility. https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsnr.2014.0009 #HistoryRemix #history #science

@Sheril. Yes, Sheril! So many talented personalities go away without being recognized for their contribution! Sad.🤔😒

The turn of the century 1800-1900 was a great time to be a female scientist and have your work claimed by others. :/

I also found this episode of „Lost women in Science“ (phenomenal podcast imho) very interesting. It seems, Lise Meitner was the one who actually understood and explained to Hahn what his findings actually meant, while he was simply puzzled about the unexpected results of his experiments. Later, however he never mentioned her crucial contributions to his studies, let alone shared the Nobel Prize with her. https://www.lostwomenofscience.org/news/lost-women-of-science-podcast-reveals-the-untold-story-of-why-physicist-lise-meitner-was-denied-the-nobel-prize-for-her-pioneering-work-on-splitting-the-atom

" But Otto Hahn demonstrated this (with Lise Meitner! & Fritz Strassmann)…"

Otto Hahn and & Fritz Strassman carried out the experiments that demonstrated nuclear fission.

Lise Meitner & her nephew Otto Frisch worked out the theory that explained nuclear fission.

Thanks for that, very interesting, especially her ideas on geochemistry.

too often the case, as with DNA in the Double Helix book account.

Opportunism and expedience in science? The last exploits previous' work?
