This Queen of the Night cactus belonged to my friend Mark who died exactly two years ago. When he was in palliative care I went to his house to look after the garden and there it was, silently flowering in salute. Every year it does this astonishing intricate thing, right on time. @plants #florespondence

@plants what a nice reminder, remembrance.

My best to you.

@plants It’s a lovely reminder, a source of joy. Mark was a great gardener, and looking after his garden for him was an honour. He was an academic celebrity, and when I asked him once if he regretted anything about his life choices he said he wished he’d done more gardening. I have his trowel, his Queen of the Night, and his borage has self seeded all over my garden and drives me nuts.

@plants thanks for that response. Interesting and heart-warming.

I have a massive lilac fro a cutting I made from my Mom’s lilac tree 24 years ago which had grown fro a cutting she made 50 years before that from a woman who had brought the cutting when she moved to the U.S. from England 34 years before that (who know the origin of THAT lilac).

Each spring, in full bloom, I can see my Mom’s smile, her glee at this wonder of nature and care.
