Democratic Underground shared this quote from my 2009 book, Unscientific America, as a quote for the day.

It’s interesting to return to in 2023, especially given my research on scientific decision making in Congress. I’m not quite sure how I would change it at first glance, but my perspective is more nuanced 14 years later. #science #democracy #politics

in reply to Murray Lang

@muzzle I disagree. There’s a big difference between what we see in politics & policy through the media & what actually takes place.

I recognized that while a staffer, but appreciate it more now.

@muzzle
Can you tell us more about “more nuanced”?
That would be interesting.
in reply to JohnMashey

@JohnMashey @muzzle I have to think about this more. While I don’t disagree with the statement exactly, it’s far too broad a brushstroke. Some politicians & staff are deeply committed to science. And often, it’s more issue based than “science” as a whole.

I now see the quote as an overgeneralization & wouldn’t write it the same way in my 40s as I did in my 20s.
