I wouldn't consider March 2025 a "far away timeline" as stated in the article.

Of course, Wayland is coming, but as long as commonly used apps are not ready, it's a no-go to switch X11 off.

It's been a while since I used Gnome for the last time (I actually use i3wm), but I don't think this could be a wrong decision.
X11 development has been quite stuck for years. Maybe Wayland still is not mature enough, but at least is being actively developed
