I was on @mike's Dot Social podcast to talk about Mastodon, #Threads (not the 1984 movie), and the social web. If you've got questions about any of those things, maybe we've covered them!

Just listened to it. Very insightful and clarified a thing or two as well.

thanks.

I would love to read the transcript. Is there a chance you could provide one?

@smallpatatas There is delivery and there is retrieval. Delivery is real-time distribution, the other is on-demand retrieval of public resources. The behaviour of user-level and server-level domain blocks is identical on both axes, but retrieval of public resources cannot be prevented unless authorized fetch mode is enabled, which comes with certain drawbacks.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@smallpatatas Ultimately I would not use the words "leak" when talking about data that is being broadcast to the public web. A "leak-proof" Mastodon server would have to go beyond authorized fetch mode, and be effectively unusable by logged-out visitors. On the user level, the most effective way to control where your posts go is to post followers-only.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Threads is funded by the same investors behind Musk.

The goal is to subsume Mastodon.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

great conversation, thank you! BTW I suggest you post a link to your Patreon account so people can easily find where they can support your efforts.

As for those using Mastodon and “wondering” if their posts are completely secure? Well duh, if you want that, I doubt you should be using any social media esp not ones run by corporate entities whose business model is to Hoover up as much info as possible about you…

THANKS FOR GIVING USERS AN ALTERNATIVE SOCIAL WEB EXPERIENCE!

take a look at Eugen's Christmas tree and listen to his clever words ... greetings from Thuringia to .5 guy behind Mastodon
in reply to Eugen Rochko

I so wish you’d covered the movie. The bleakest thing I’ve ever seen. Traumatised me as a teenager
in reply to Eugen Rochko

thanks for the explanation. what would you say are the drawbacks of authorized fetch?

@smallpatatas @mike

in reply to Eugen Rochko

I listened to it yesterday and enjoyed it greatly. Thank you both!
in reply to Eugen Rochko

great Job from both of you on this. One of the questions not posed but useful would be advice on how we, users, can help further evangelize the social web to the masses. Is there any particular way we can help?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

@smallpatatas Exposure to a highly exploitative corporation – and by that, I mean all of it including the harassment and the fallout from their automated moderation – should NOT be opt-out.

Good podcast. Good interview. It really helped me understand the growth potential of Activity Hub in particular. Your vision for growth and individual choice, a non-intuitive pairing, is brilliant. Thank you for building this green, friendly, and fertile ecosystem.

This was a great Interview.
So true: the fediverse and activitypub is a game changer.
I recognized that when I joined Mastodon in early 2022. Originally I just wanted to look what the protocols is at all.
But since that I am a proud little monthly Patreon Spender.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Sounds great! What would be the best way to contact you for an interview request?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

the main thing that I learned from this episode is that there is someone on the planet even more enthusiastic about ActivityPub than I am.

great podcast! Could you share a link to the blog posts you mentioned, which explain ActivityPub with Ruby?
in reply to Eugen Rochko

cool! I was just reaching out to you the other day to have a discussion with our Fosstodon community as part of a meetup. Let me know if you’d be interested.
