This is a smart move by @Mastodon. #Twitter / #X journalism is struggling, and #Threads doesn’t want journalism. Mastodon is leaning into it though, “To reinforce and encourage Mastodon as the go-to place for journalism, we’re launching a new feature today.” I think this is a lever for differentiation; making Mastodon more valuable to journalists and users.

how long until threads threatens to or actually does start blocking mastodon.social for allowing nudity?
would dot social bend the knee in that scenario and change their policy? probably

"extreme anti-trans hate content remains widespread across instagram, facebook, and threads. characterized by fear-mongering, lies, conspiracy theories, dehumanizing tropes, and violent rhetoric, these posts — many by high-follower accounts — aim to boost engagement, generate revenue, and seed hateful narratives about trans, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming people. these accounts profit from such hate, and so does meta and its shareholders"

MAKING THE FEDIPACT WEBSITE MORE ACCESSIBLE
some accessibility concerns with https://fedipact.online have been brought to my attention and i'm working on addressing them. more specifically, the readability of the color contrast and the animations
i wanna put a button on there that flips the text and background colors, making it hot pink on black, and disables the animated floating hearts (they're already disabled if the user has "reduced motion" on)
i just... don't have the web design skills necessary to do so lol. BUT someone else is working on it!!! so it should be fixed and better soonsies
thanks to everyone who pointed this out
Stop Using Threads consumes a list of users and tells you which of those users interact with Threads. You can use it to remove Threads participants from your timeline.
You can find out the tool's opinion on you by entering your own name, or you can just Submit with default settings to find out about Gargron.

"... the website loads in a special browser built into the app, rather than your phone’s default browser. In 2022, privacy researcher Felix Krause found that Meta injects special “keylogging” JavaScript onto the website you’re visiting that allows the company to monitor everything you type and tap on, including passwords. Other apps including TikTok do the same thing."

been seeing a lotta posts lately that're like "OMFG THESE FEDIPACT PEOPLE ARE BLOCKING EVERY INSTANCE THAT FEDERATES WITH THREADS"
no. we're not. nothing anywhere on https://fedipact.online says anything about that lmao
i have seen exactly one example of someone planning to do this, and that's it
it's being blown ridiculously outta proportion
this is why many people who're so adamantly against federating with threads are so goddamn ANGRY
we're so fucking tired tired of having our safe spaces -- our refuges against queerphobia -- ripped away from us
queer people, outcasts, weirdos, etc. -- we built this fucking this network. we laid the groundwork for its very existence and now you're trying to tell us we don't matter, that we should just give it all up in the face of some evil megacorp. well fuck that
we're not going down without a fight
I honestly think we should take advantage of the exposure we'll receive from Threads and make more accessible instances that advertise themselves to more mainstream users.
Just outright blocking Meta or only hoping they "play nice" with us is probably going to end badly. Instead, we should be trying to expand our own foothold.
#SocialMedia provider or #socialmedia instance.
#Mastodon and #threads, and #bsky and others are brands. And brands carry baggage.
Just like we host #email. We also host #social
Very few care what is under the hood of our email servers. And it should be the same for social.
I was on @mike's Dot Social podcast to talk about Mastodon, #Threads (not the 1984 movie), and the social web. If you've got questions about any of those things, maybe we've covered them!

@Gargron @benny
If they had hoped for #Threads to federate for getting all their connections back, this is a blow. Now they have to hope, that the people on #Threads they want to connect with, opt-in to the federation.
But it gives another incentive to #Mastodon and the #Fediverse to advertise itself. Not something, both were especially good in the past, to be honest.
For #Meta that makes it substantially easier to moderate for the #Fediverse: They only have to keep an eye on accounts, that opted-in to the federation. (Of course, only if they even want to moderate)
For people (say some journalists), who like #Mastodon and the #Fediverse, but who miss some or large parts of the former user base of #Twitter, this will create an incentive to migrate to #Threads even. There, they have potentially all connections.
So, accounts on #Threads will have to opt-in to #federation with #Mastodon and the #Fediverse.
https://www.threads.net/@mosseri/post/C051TLnud8U
Correct me, if I'm wrong, but doesn't that change the whole debate here? Only a small part of #Threads user base will do that. The majority doesn't know about the #Fediverse, and won't care.
But that also means that there won't be a flood of content/accounts/stuff from Threads here in the Fediverse. For the most part, both will stay separated.
Adam Mosseri (@mosseri) on Threads
The current plan is you'll have to have a public account and explicitly opt in to your content being available on other servers.Threads
@Gargron Yes, but this does not address the issue. The concern expressed here is the use of this identity data, as well as Mastodon user content and interactions, for the purpose of Threads broader business services, including ads.
As described in the document Supplemental Privacy Policy: https://help.instagram.com/515230437301944
IMPORTANT. Threads stated policy is to collect and exploit Fediverse user personal data without explicit consent.
Now is a very good time to review Threads Terms of Use (https://terms.threads.com/terms-of-use) and Supplemental Privacy Policy (https://help.instagram.com/515230437301944).
Note just by following a Threads user or replying to a post, Meta claims they are entitled to your personal data.
And what do they say they will do with your data? Provide you with "business services (including ads)."

the thing is, you really don't even need to look at #Facebook's past to know blocking Threads is an absolute must. there are literally organisations calling for the murder of queer people with accounts on #Threads RIGHT NOW.
any instance that commits to "active moderation against racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia" (which includes all the instances in https://joinmastodon.org/servers , by the way) is in violation of their own ToS if they DON'T block Threads.
The recent excitement surrounding Thread's arrival on the Fediverse is concerning. To understand why this is not a good idea, consider their economic interest in harvesting data, their poor moderation, and their manipulations. Nothing good can come from their federation. Don't roll out the red carpet for them.

Meta renews commitment to make Threads part of the fediverse
https://www.coywolf.news/social/meta-renews-commitment-to-make-threads-part-of-the-fediverse/
A good read. Key bit:
"Obviously, the social networking space is undergoing a major shakeup. Twitter under Elon Musk’s chaotic reign has seemingly created an opportunity for an alternative microblogging service. With #Threads and #Mastodon both embracing #ActivityPub, it might not be one platform that wins out—but an open standard. "
Reposting to add alt text:
uh were any of you people who signed up to #threads actually paying attention to the onboarding flow?
This conversation is vital to the development of some sort of consensus as to how we as a community are going to continue to co-exist if and when instances begin to federate with #Meta.
The "relay" issue that Jon raises should be explicitly addressed. That is, if you federate with #Threads and do not enable auth_fetch it seems like posts that your user's boost will be sent to Meta (See https://mastodon.online/@mastodonmigration/110622589366603128).
