Apparently, if you have facebook or Instagram installed on your phone, #Meta was able to track your browsing habits and link them to your real identity even if you never logged in on the web, used incognito mode or a VPN. I hope Meta gets hit with every fine in the book.

Google and Microsoft recently admitted their emissions are soaring as they build out data centers to power the AI boom.
But new analysis from The Guardian suggests the data center emissions of Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Apple are 662% higher than the companies reporting.

"... the website loads in a special browser built into the app, rather than your phone’s default browser. In 2022, privacy researcher Felix Krause found that Meta injects special “keylogging” JavaScript onto the website you’re visiting that allows the company to monitor everything you type and tap on, including passwords. Other apps including TikTok do the same thing."
What the hell?? This is so creepy.

I honestly think we should take advantage of the exposure we'll receive from Threads and make more accessible instances that advertise themselves to more mainstream users.
Just outright blocking Meta or only hoping they "play nice" with us is probably going to end badly. Instead, we should be trying to expand our own foothold.
For #Meta that makes it substantially easier to moderate for the #Fediverse: They only have to keep an eye on accounts, that opted-in to the federation. (Of course, only if they even want to moderate)
For people (say some journalists), who like #Mastodon and the #Fediverse, but who miss some or large parts of the former user base of #Twitter, this will create an incentive to migrate to #Threads even. There, they have potentially all connections.
The recent excitement surrounding Thread's arrival on the Fediverse is concerning. To understand why this is not a good idea, consider their economic interest in harvesting data, their poor moderation, and their manipulations. Nothing good can come from their federation. Don't roll out the red carpet for them.

This week, I went over to Bluesky and asked people who'd left Mastodon why they left, and lots of people told me. I grabbed the replies and crunched them and wrote up a summary. I think it's really interesting and often kind of wrenching.

Mastodon is easy and fun except when it isn’t - Erin Kissane's small internet website
After my last long post, I got into some frustrating conversations, among them one in which an open-source guy repeatedly scoffed at the idea oferinkissane.com
Yeah, that's gonna be a hard pass from me thanks, Rachel.
Zero interest in having a conversation with #Meta "off the record" or otherwise.
Sharing this purely to be as transparent as possible with our members.
This conversation is vital to the development of some sort of consensus as to how we as a community are going to continue to co-exist if and when instances begin to federate with #Meta.
The "relay" issue that Jon raises should be explicitly addressed. That is, if you federate with #Threads and do not enable auth_fetch it seems like posts that your user's boost will be sent to Meta (See mastodon.online/@mastodonmigra…).
In general there are two distinct reactions to #Meta:
1) no way, no how -- either because of their history, the strong presence of anti-trans and racist groups on #Threads, belief there's no way to mitigate threats, or whatever. #FediPact is an example of this.
2) acknowledging all those issues but weighing them against potential upsides and considering what criteria make sense. Yours is one of the best-thought-out examples of this I've seen so far.

I think I found the domain name of #Threads, #Meta's new #Fedi-enabled service, also codenamed #Project92, #P92, and #Barcelona.
URL: threads.net
IPv4: 157.240.22.63
IPv6: 2a03:2880:f231:c5:face:b00c:0:43fe (note "face:b00c")
Looking up threads.net returns #Instagram's logo, the title "Barcelona" and "this page isn't available" (probably because it's not open yet).
I'd recommend every #MastoAdmin #FediAdmin in the #FediPact to #FediBlock them before they go live on the #Fediverse!
Regarding the position of scicomm.xyz on #Meta and in the Fediverse, #FediPact etc.
After discussion between myself and the other mods and considering the views expressed by the people on our instance we have decided that pre-emptive blocking of Meta is warranted.
There is more detail on the background and explanation of this decision in a post on our companion site, here:

Thanks to our people for their comments and suggestions to help us reach this decision.

Rumors are tearing this place apart out here about secret deals with #Meta. The latest is that Meta has held #NDA meetings with some of you and they will federate with large instances under contracts providing financial support (1) (2).

We, the moderation and administration of tech.lgbt, are signing the Anti-Meta Fedi Pact in fellowship with our peer communities. (vantaa.black/pact)
There is over a decade of precedent that Facebook will not have users' best interests as their guiding principle but rather profit margins, if it joins the Fediverse.
We at tech.lgbt have long held the belief that corporation owned instances are a threat to the core of the Fediverse: freedom for users to be themselves and to be a part of their communities. The 2010s saw the loss of online freedom when the majority of the Web was consolidated into a few destinations, and Facebook entering here could lead us back to centralization. Furthermore, NDAs for server admins will constrain our sovereignty online by binding us legally from disrupting their business.
We are not products. We are people, and we do not welcome Facebook in this space.
#meta #FediPact #facebook #project92 #mastodon #fediverse #FediBlockMeta #FediAdmin #p92 #MastoAdmin
By the way, We have joined hundreds of admins and mods across the fediverse in pledging to block Facebook/Meta-owned servers (and have already blocked a couple likely domains): fedipact.online/
Facebook's right-wing bias, lack of moderation, and extremely successful attempt to essentially replace the web in vast portions of the world have been disastrous for the Internet and society in general. I have also seen several cycles of giant corporations running services using open protocols and, once they've captured a big enough userbase, switching to a proprietary system and then killing it off whenever they feel like it.
A better Internet is possible—but not funded by ads and run for profit by a single giant evil corporation.
