¡Se Llama Fediverso! Octubre, 2025

Para difundir al Fediverso, el pasado viernes 24 de octubre se llevó a cabo la sesión ¡Se Llama Fediverso! en el LabNL, en el marco de la 14.ª Semana Global de la Alfabetización Mediática e Informacional organizada por la UNESCO.

A pesar de que me considero de los menos indicados para dar una charla sobre el tema (ya que mi perfil y mis experiencias como docente se encuentran en el área del Arte Gráfico y Secuencial) me animé a preparar material enfocado a explicar los conceptos básicos a personas sin ningún tipo de contacto anterior con el tema pues en la ciudad de Monterrey no he visto movimiento que persiga dicho fin.

Esta edición de la Semana AMI estaba enfocada en Inteligencia Artificial (¡giuk!) pero no quise retirar mi participación pues también estuvo programada una charla con Verificado MX, y bueno, tampoco quise dejar pasar la oportunidad de deslizar comentarios críticos sobre el gasto energético y los centros de datos.

¿Cómo salió al final? Pues diferente y mejor a como lo había imaginado, entre las personas que asistieron estaban @alemm, @vgarzareyna y @brazhh que ayudaron a que la charla fluyera de mejor manera, así que les doy las gracias. Good morning everyone.

One million people are facing imminent death and destruction at the hands of Israel in Gaza.¹

Israel has issued evacuation orders for one million people. These are people who have been displaced over and over again in Israel’s ongoing genocide. They have nowhere left to go. To move South costs thousands of dollars to rent land, a tent, and sanitation due to war-time profiteering.² That’s if they can get someone outside of Palestine to host their fundraiser and if they can keep their social media accounts from being shut down by mainstream Big Tech platforms and after paying half the donation amount or more in commission while withdrawing the funds that are sent to them.

Things are desperate.

Mastodon and the fediverse are the last lifeline for people from Gaza. It’s their last chance of reaching us in the outside world so that we might help them survive the genocide and famine being wrought out by Israel.

@joynewacc and I are having video conversations with people from Gaza who have Mastodon accounts every day to verify them in hopes that this will help them raise funds to live.

You can find the verified accounts on Gaza Verified:

I hope you will follow them on the fediverse, perhaps send them a few words of love and solidarity so they know they’re not alone but that there are some of us that see, hear, love and support them.

And, if you can, please support their fundraisers, boost their posts, and share their accounts.

Thank you in advance for making our friends from Gaza who are facing unspeakable horrors welcome on the fediverse and for showing that humanity is not entirely dead in the rest of the world.

Please note that many Palestinians use automated translation tools, including AI-based ones so you might notice issues with translation or even transliteration (so, for example, a name is written Eman in one place but Iman in another). Also, not everyone is social media or technically savvy. These are everyday people trying to survive a genocide and a famine so please understand that there might be issues with the accounts. That doesn’t mean that they’re not genuine. If you have any concerns, you can talk to me. (Furthermore, there are concerted efforts by some groups to spread FUD about Palestinian accounts with the goal of getting them all shut down. If you notice any such behaviour, please also alert me. To server admins: closing their accounts is tantamount to handing out a death sentence. We’re here to help if you need it.)

Linux communities beware of #PewDiePie fans

Regardless of PewDiePie’s personal #politics (which clearly, at the very least are problematic), it is fairly well known by anyone who has been following him for any number of years that the vast majority of his fan base are enthusiastic fascists.

Now #PewDiePie , who’s content centers around PC gaming and Windows, has decided to switch to #Linux and published a video encouraging his followers to do the same. This means a very large number of his #fascist fan base is going to be switching to Linux.

Now many Linux communities are going to be forced to more explicitly choose their politics. Like the parable of the Nazi bar, if the community remains politically neutral, it will become fascist in short order.

A few things to be wary of:

• People asking you not to be “too political” or to “focus on the technology, not the politics” is a classic and highly effective fascist ruse to get moderators to lighten up on fascist elements posting in their community.
• People complaining about free speech rights. The #Internet and the #Fediverse is already a domain where people can speak freely about their politics by running their own server and building their own community with few to no government constraints. You don’t need to compromise on whether fascists have the right to free speech in your community.
• Arguments over your code of conduct (CC) and “safe spaces.” Keep them up-to-date. Research other people’s CCs, learn about the history of why these CCs came to be, learn about what the function of each clause of the code is included and phrased the way it is. These were usually designed to make explicit the fact that a community wants to be a safe space where underprivileged people can feel comfortable expressing themselves, and it is very easy to make people afraid to express themselves. Fascists understand these CCs and the concept of “safe spaces” were explicitly designed to exclude them, and often attack these ideas.

I just discovered why some of my followers from larger #Mastodon instances (like mastodon.social) would mysteriously unfollow me after a while!

A pull request was just merged in Mastodon that fixes a critical bug in their follower synchronization mechanism.

Turns out Mastodon implements the FEP-8fcf specification (Followers collection synchronization across servers), but it expected all followers to be in a single page collection. When followers were split across multiple pages, it would only see the first page and incorrectly remove all followers from subsequent pages!

This explains so much about the strange behavior I've been seeing with #Hollo and other #Fedify-based servers over the past few months. Some people would follow me from large instances, then mysteriously unfollow later without any action on their part.

Thankfully this fix has been marked for backporting, so it should appear in an upcoming patch release rather than waiting for the next major version. Great news for all of us building on #ActivityPub!

This is why I love open source—we can identify, understand, and fix these kinds of interoperability issues together. 😊
