The criticisms from this 2022 article are still true today at the end of 2024.

The signup process is too hard and servers are too opaque for users to make good decisions when they come to the Fediverse. One example: some major server instances have blocked threads.net and *then* blocked servers that federate to threads.net. Policies are not evenly applied or even visible to users when they sign up for a server.

I would... disagree? We removed the requirement of picking a server in the first half of 2023, the option is still available but for anyone who's not interested there's a big simple button to make an account on mastodon.social. I've watched a lot of people go through this process in front of me and it can hardly be simplified any more.

The more difficult part is connecting the new user to something they're interested in after they sign up. This area has been reworked a couple of times throughout 2023 and 2024, though even in 2022 you were already presented with follow suggestions after signing up--not sure why the author omitted that from the article.

@Gargron Frankly, it would still be difficult to topple Twitter unless it gets proper implementation of DMs like Twitter does.
