‘The Red Tree’
Léo Gausson (1860-1944)
Léo Gausson was a French Post-Impressionist who worked closely with the artists of the Pont-Aven circle. His landscapes are remembered for their expressive use of colour. This is one of my favourites.
Gausson was later mentioned in a letter from Theo van Gogh to his brother Vincent in connection with a proposed exchange of paintings, which was completed after Vincent's death.

The launch of the furze pavilion last night was very well attended. I performed a ritual and opened the structure to the public.
And it's confirmed that the pavilion will stay in Knockree for the coming months, for the use of the community in east Wicklow!

In the first week of July, I'll be building a temporary art pavilion in the hills of Wicklow at Knockree Hostel. It will be built from and dedicated to the plant known in Wicklow as furze (aka gorse, aiteann, whin and many other things).
There'll be a wekend of events including a walk-and-talk with an ecologist, a map workshop with a planning researcher, and some activities making charcoal and paint from the plant. Schedule coming soon.

On site for a first test build of a furze pavilion at Knockree Hostel, Wicklow for the #art project 'Furze: fuel fodder thatch tools toys' led by Mermaid Arts Centre.
I've been researching the history of furze (aka gorse, whin or aiteann) as a technology. I'll be using the plant to create an outdoor pavilion in July showing some of its uses historically and creating some contemporary uses.
This is a wattle fence made from the plant. I'm leaving the thorns on despite my skin's objections.

This weekend we had a collective work session for 'Another Infrastructure (AI)', an art project about the environmental and social impact of data centres in south Dublin.
Seven artists will build a community-run server and host artist led workshops and events over the next few months, opening conversations about topics including heat, disinformation, tokens, game systems, counter-maps and thneeds.

This July I will be building a temporary art pavilion in Wicklow, Ireland. It will celebrate the folk traditions and technologies of the plant known in the Irish language as aiteann (aka gorse/furze/whin).
I will be building the pavilion from the wood and thorny leaves of the plant. Aiteann was once used in thatch along with other materials like straw and willow. I have been learning the process from a thatcher named Anthony.
