I guess #unity has decided to jump on the #enshittification bus along with #twitter, #reddit, and all the others.

#Reddit is coming up with new manipulative design patterns… that’s an accomplishment I guess 🙄 https://www.theverge.com/2023/7/18/23799266/reddit-app-icons-ugly

r/Firefox is doing it right - The mods announced they were reopening the #subreddit, but made it so new posts could only be pictures of foxes or red pandas…then said if people wanted to post about technical stuff, to do it on their kbin.

THAT is how you do it. The subreddit is still there, but functionally unusable, and there’s direction to the new place. #Reddit

Oh.

Apparently as part of what #Reddit is doing with the API, while they allowed some specific #accessibility apps an exemption, they didn't offer it to any apps that provided #blind users with full moderator functionality.

Which means in July, Reddit is going to start removing blind moderators for not being able to moderate, due to Reddit not planning on built-in accessibility to their site or their app, and not allowing exemptions for third party apps that support blind moderators. Indeed, Reddit admins seem somewhat unaware they have blind users and blind moderators.

....

I don't think #AaronSwartz would approve. But it seems clear to me that Huffman has no respect for what that man stood for and died for in the first place, and perhaps he never did. If he did, we the tech community would never have forgotten Swartz.

Reddit's API Protest Is An Absolute Disaster #Reddit #YouTube https://youtu.be/nXYOdnn_FLo

In response to threats to forcibly remove moderators if subreddits don’t reopen, /r/pics polled it’s users and has chosen to reopen after changing its rules to allow only sexy pics of John Oliver.

Malicious compliance at its finest. Way to go, fam!

Reddit's API Pricing Is Absolute Insanity #Reddit https://youtu.be/GHWpJwe49sk

Holy shit. It's not just that the #Lemmy dev is a tankie, he's a LaRouche conspiracy-brain NazBol. Okay #fediverse tell me how this isn't as bad as Gleason's Soapbox and how you are separating art & artist because making them a Eugen-level BDFL just has to happen because of the #Reddit exodus.

We're now sub 6,500, and it's only going down faster #Reddit

What started out as a two-day protest against Reddit virtually destroying third party apps and it's API has turned into an "indefinite" protest because the Reddit CEO has blown off the initial protest saying "it will pass" in a leaked internal memo.

List of demands:

  1. Lower the price of API calls to a level that doesn't kill Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Narwhal, Baconreader, and similar third-party apps.
  2. Communicate on a more open and timely basis about changes to Reddit which will affect large numbers of moderators and users.
  3. To allow mods to continue keeping Reddit safe for all users, NSFW subreddit data must remain available through the API.

after the shenanigans that #reddit is pulling with third party apps, with the CEO giving no fucks about their unpaid moderators, whom use said apps, I quit Reddit outright. I highly suggest anyone with a shred of a moral compass to do the same.

🆕 blog! “Why did Usenet fail?”

This is annecdata - not a serious academic study. Adjust your expectations accordingly. When I first got online, the World Wide Web was still in its infancy - so CompuServe was my gateway to the Internet. I loved their well organised chat room. A couple of clicks and I could be discussing Babylon 5 with […]

@fishcharlie There’s a #Reddit alternative that’s a part of the #Fediverse (just how Mastodon is). It’s called #Lemmy. Maybe people can move to that. 🤔 https://join-lemmy.org

#Reddit removes login and signup buttons (at least for me, and yes, I tried to zoom out and still)

To login, use: https://www.reddit.com/login

This will be great exposure for Mastodon, and I'm excited that it's happening on Reddit. These two are currently the only social sites I use.
