There's been 3 recently: Emacs (org-mode is a godsend) Musescore (good for listening to stuff as it's made) Alda (I know MML far too well for my own good)
cron ⏳⏰ 🌘 was well known to me since I learned Unix before Linux. However it developed with Linux and improved after I learned the */n time token in crontab. I even learned Quartz for even more versatile schedules.
