This implies that we have to get rid of all desktops and distros but one.
If that's the case, then Linux will never become mainstream.
I disagree with that.
I believe Linux will become mainstream as soon as there are very inexpensive hardware with Linux out-of-the-box.
Stores like Best Buy should also have demos out there. You as a customer, can already demo Windows, Mac OS, and Chrome OS; I don't see why you can't demo Linux Mint, Ubuntu (and flavors), Zorin OS, etc.
Then, why don't we have the Year of the Linux Desktop? Mac and Linux should have 97% market share.
Because, well, on Windows the flavour you choose matters a lot. Win 10 or 11, Home, Pro, Enterprise. Original, OEM or pirated. And then there are the "N" variants for the EU...
On Linux: The popular distros have so much in common, and the choice for a beginner is irrelevant. At the beginning it is not Fedora vs Debian, but Linux-specifics vs Windows.
I've gone through a bit of analysis-paralysis trying to select which distro and desktop I want to use to replace Windows 10 on my 10+ year old hardware. In the end, I am going to have to pick one and install it, and be ready to change which distro is installed if it turns out to be a bad choice. I've used Linux off and on for over 15 years, so I really feel the pain of someone not familiar with Linux trying to make this choice. This will be the first time I use it full time at home.
I do not agree. Is not about GNU/Linux... It is about the market of hardware unruled for pre-installed software. In my country it is almost impossible to buy a computer without Windows or Mac pre-installed. If you ask for none OS installed, simply there are any discounts.
