Self-Portrait with a Red Pencil by Léon Spilliaert, 1908. During his youth, Spilliaert painted a series of self-portraits. Initially, these were simple representations of his appearance, but later they evolved into complex images in which reality, reflection, and fantasy merge. In Self-Portrait with Red Pencil, he depicted himself as a black silhouette with dark-rimmed eyes. He holds a red pencil in his hand with determination. He is in a room in his parents' house, bathed in nighttime light, wearing a dark suit with a stiff collar, which he often wore.
