Seems like another classic is getting revived with the power of open source. Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri from 1999 has a remake in progress called GLSMAC.

fingers crossed for a better work-sharing system for the Terraformers in the end-game. I swear my entire global fleet of hovering terraformers would all try to go to one space and then the first unit would get it and then they would all race to the next.

Great game. I would love to see an “official” remake by Firaxis. I think they tried several years ago and missed the mark.
