It's wild how social media outside of the fediverse has deteriorated. You have followers, but if your post doesn't please some opaque algorithm, they'll never see what you post. You have to avoid certain words to please the algorithm. If you refresh the page good luck finding the same posts again. And people put up with it.

The "see what you follow" will become more and more important on platforms like Mastodon

I love how I can just say FUCK here and I don't get algorithmed to death.

I find it amazing also on YouTube. I watch some people that monitor the current war situations in ukraine and the middle east and they can't use the words "kill" or even "terrorist", "hamas", "hezbollah" and more without at least getting demonitized or blocked. It is complete bonkers and only going to get worse with every state in the world now taking shots at forbidding unwanted things

I find Threads algorithms to be rather primitive. Twitter is just a cynical, alt right, Elon's ego, dumpster fire.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Instagram has been censoring political posts for months now. Even posting a comment which is factually true on a political post will get flagged.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

The algorithms are huge barriers to meaningful conversation.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

one interesting thing Threads insights showed me was how little my posts are seen by my followers.

> Zuckerberg has a First Amendment right to make decisions about what to promote on his platforms.

I feel (as an european) that's such a weird take?! Why should Zuckerberg be able to decide what's being shared, on what is basically a major public townsquare, only because he owns it?

in reply to Eugen Rochko

"put up with it"? I'd go a step further and say it doesn't matter for most. Social media provides the illusion of being heard, and can thus satisfy the narcissism and obsessions of billions.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

I don't get it. I started getting fed up with #Facebook when it started changing its settings and layout on a seemingly weekly basis -about 12 years ago. And the various malicious functions of its algorithm have been well-known since at least that time.

Again, I don't get it.

sounds like China. Meta is the Chinese Firewall of the rest-of-world.

if you voice an idea anywhere left of Ronald Reagan, you're shadow banned.

Thank you for creating a space without vitriol. Gave us a soft landing when Musk turned Twitter into a cesspool…

I used to think the whole "the algorithm kills content" sentiment was super sensationalized until huge YouTubers started censoring words like "kill" "die" or even "gun" . Then TikTok people don't even write those words on their vids, but have to censor it like "k!LL" . Maybe I'm just a hag but it happened SO FAST like a switched flipped and weird censorship started just this year. Was it so much earlier? God I'm always so tardy to the party

I've tried to convince FB connections to switch here. But I wonder how many saw my FB post with links to Mastodon and the Fediverse. :thaenkin:
in reply to Eugen Rochko

the article ends with these infuriating lines: « She’ll keep on posting, she says: “I’ll do a little yelling into the void.”
Unfortunately for our democracy, she doesn’t have a lot of other choices. »

It’s such a missed opportunity not to mention the Fediverse and its chronological feeds / lack of opaque algorithms.

Once I’m properly caffeinated I will write an email to Mr. Fowler and also post a comment on the article…

That is the reason why we would love to welcome you in Leipzig for the "Medientage Mittelstand" 2025 for a keynote.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

that's actually going to suit some people, but I suspect not most. When I look at Threads, I'm overwhelmed by the banality of it all.

What's missing is serious conversations about serious subjects, like politics.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

For me most social media platforms turned into asocial platforms. I reduced my time on platforms, only two are left: mastodon and linkedin. I turned back to provide content on my websites. I do not seek many followers, only to reach out to the serious people to discuss serious issues.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

People not using any links to support their point of view out of fear their posting might be penalized for luring people out of their "opinium" den or ad-social media timeline cages into the wild wide web is something that puts me off.

Unless you say something @Gargron doesn't like. Then he bans your server, and nobody on his server ever sees your posts again.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

it's way more obscure than that. I follow an artist (stuz0r) who's art posts reach hardly anyone anymore, but their text posts trying to figure out why reach *everyone*

One of the most absurd things to me is the power given to the algorithm over our language. The way it is changing, shaping and erasing words from our collective vocabulary.

I'm curious to know if there's ever been quite this level of interference in language before.

great to have Mastodon. and for the #dutch i made this Facebook alternative nlsociaal.nl (nlsociaal.nl/wallposts) for public posts
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Threads is a shit show and I hope they will reverse the integration with fediverse.
Ive seen a lot of Threads account pushing for Bluesky and that is also a shit show "integration". It's safely to say that the #Fediverse is the best place to be so far.

They use the dead bird site because of freedom of speech but the dead bird site applies an algorithm that dictates what you see and who can see what you say.

Crazy…

Well, as Willie Sutton famously said when asked why he robbed banks, "That's where the money is."

Twitter, Instagram, etc., have really become influencer platforms. Facebook, too, though to a slightly lesser degree. Jack Dorsey's new Blue Sky (or whatever he's calling it) could become that as well.

The face of what social media is has changed since the '00s; for the time being, I'd rather be here on Mastodon.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

Its nuts. It’s not social media, it’s big media exploiting. It’s toxic.

I love Mastodon. Thank you and all those everywhere that made it happen.

Thanks to my excellent host @christianp for Mathstodon.

Thanks everyone who is here.

Everyone Is Awesome!

The Post pulls an interesting trick to distort poll results. It takes a poll which says "20 percent of U.S. adults now regularly get news on the [Instagram] social network" and recasts it as "One in five American adults regularly get their news from Instagram."

Adding the word "their" suggests IG is the primary or exclusive news source for 1 in 5. The poll only says that people "get news" from it.

Poll distortion is a favorite journalistic game.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

This reasoning excludes the Fediverse? So you don’t think of Threads as part of it?
Dunno what to think.
in reply to Eugen Rochko

Any network that does not offer a full take in chronological order of the people i follow ist crossed out. It's a red flag.

The power that Mosseri and other in similar position have to restrict what people say and how they say it is what gives Mosseri his inflated salary and inflates his ego. From a Fediverse point of view it is so archaic and baffling that is still baffling. There is n other justification for Mossery position and inflated salary beacuse threads is an absolute shit experience. He lately offer people to sue a fart soon when pressing the logo...

> It's wild how social media outside of the fediverse has deteriorated ... And people put up with it

Two words; monopoly, enshittification.

in reply to Eugen Rochko

meanwhile on Mastodon I hear that ...

"The moderator of @mastodon.social is hiding and limiting people's accounts for opposing the #genocide in #gaza done by #us and israel.

What kind of bad, ignorant person do you have to be to call it a holocaust inversion?"

in reply to Eugen Rochko

it's a really important concept that isn't talked about enough. I think people have come to expect that they will see everything from their friends ala email/sms but will only see what the corporation decides to show them in media ala social media platforms but also TV etc. #ActivityPub and rss (real podcasts) break that. people might care at the personal level but it matters culturally. #AttentionDemocracy
