But the #Neocons in the #USA & #UK had by that time already bought off Yeltsin, who had his own grudge against the #USSR because of his family's fortunes suffering under #Stalin. Yeltsin was bent on undermining Gorbachev at every turn.

When #Putin came to power in 1999 following elections (Yeltsin was by then too ill & unpopular to run again) he was resolute in ensuring that Russia never again suffer humiliation & plunder by the West. To this day, however, there is no effort to restore communism.

Putin is a capitalist himself, & like Yeltsin, believes in a federated Russian sovereignty in which there are clear socio-economic classes & oligarchic dominance over society. Putin, however, restricts the oligarchs from having too much say in politics.

The extreme poverty & suffering that resulted was entirely intentional, designed to economically brutalize Russians into submission. It failed, largely b/c of Russian historical events & Yeltsin's inebriated authoritarianism driving resistance.
