NEAR Shoemaker became the 1st ever spacecraft to touch down on an asteroid #OTD in 2001. Although the probe wasn't expected to survive the landing, it surprised scientists by continuing to transmit data for ~2 weeks on Eros! https://go.nasa.gov/3JN2Vd0
