The Mercury 7 were the test pilots who knew they could die, but they were the heroes that the US people needed. This was beginning of the space race, which was also showmanship of intercontinental ballistic missile technology during the Cold War. It created jobs for many veterans who used the GI Bill to get advanced degrees.
