#OTD in 1964, NASA's SR-71 Blackbird made its 1st flight.

The SR-71 was designed to cruise at Mach 3.2 and at altitudes up to 85,000 ft, making it ideal for high-speed, high-altitude @NASAaero research.

SR-71 Blackbird

Two SR-71 aircraft were used by NASA as testbeds for high-speed, high-altitude aeronautical research. The aircraft, an SR-71A and an SR-71B pilot trainer aircraft were based at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, CA.

I remember flying the SR-71 in the Chuck Yeager flight sim on the #Commodore64 when I was a kid. Always been my favorite!

Drop the cover story. We all know it was a spy plane. What's up with all the recent mentions in the news? Oh, right we had hypersonic, 40 years ago. I doubt we could build this plane now if our lives depended on it. After all 7aurie 7eshin is in charge at JPL!

I'm all for space exploration and NASA...however, "Space for Peace" (parallel to "Atoms for peace).
This is a prime example and only one - recasting the intelligence (spy) SR-71 plane as a NASA research vehicle.
