The Arctic blast in the northeastern U.S.& Canada reminded me of this #ClimateChange comic from nearly a decade ago by @rosemarymosco of Bird and Moon Comics. https://rosemarymosco.com/ #weather

and why remind people that climate and weather are two different concepts https://youtu.be/cBdxDFpDp_k

in spite of this image European winter still doesn't feel like a heatwave.

Not the only subject where at least some americans forget there’s a whole world out there. Even here on Mastodon, unfortunately

(And yes, this specific is also why ‘global warming’ is no longer used, and The Guardian explicitly chose Climate Crisis over Climate Change. Extreme cold can be part of the manifestation)

There are methodological and interpretive issues as presented in that graph.

Consider this:

This argument makes me so angry, and I see it on both sides.

"Temperatures in this small part of the world was unusually high for a few days, therefore global warming is real."

"Temperatures in this small part of the world was unusually low for a few days, therefore global warming is not real."

People should be forced to repeat elementary school until they learn what an average is.

Climate change, according to my classes, instigates extreme weather swings, such as freezing winters and scalding summers.

Climate change is real, and "winter is still cold" is NOT AN EXCUSE FOR *YOUR* GODDAMN IGNORANCE

CLIMATE. CHANGE. IS. REAL.

GET THAT IN PEOPLES' HEADS!

remember back when Jim Inhofe (Senator from OK and the chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee 🙄) brought a snowball into the Senate floor to essentially “prove” climate change wasn’t real?

It is not global warming, it is climate chaos.

A system of incredible complexity, self reinforcing balancing complexity, making life possible.

The universe is blindingly, searingly, hostile to life.

Only billions of years of increasing complexity allows a gossamer mist of life to cling to this lava ball., cooled by unlikely water.

Like a childs top, it could fall wildly out of control.
We can no longer burn carbon

And this local cold spell may actually be a predicted symptom of climate change. Warming in the Arctic sends these polar vortices farther south than they used to go, causing deep freezes we have not seen before.
