Gitlab Is Finally Becoming A Useful Git Forge #YouTube #Linux #opensource https://youtu.be/v68NFdZIMKI

Hu? Gitlab has always been great and better than github. Git hub's work flows is just a copy of gitlab ci. Gitlab also lets you create a new repo on push. Their Kanban board and issues has always been better than github.

@yisraeldov Github has the massive advantage of being a centralized platform, Gitlab can see massive benefits by reducing the barrier between servers and allowing us to collaborate no matter where our accounts are, just like we can on Mastodon, Pleroma, misskey, etc.
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Ok, but git is by definition, decentralized. I feel like lots of these "forges" are re-inventing the wheel.
in reply to Yisrael Dov :emacs: :nixos:

@yisraeldov Git is but the Gitlab UI isn't, if I want to make an MR on x.gitlab.com and I have an account on y.gitlab.com I simply can't do that.
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Well, I mean technically you can. The same we the linux kernel has been doing it for thousands of years, via email.

But I understand what you are saying.

It would be nice if we could start moving back away from these centralized forges, even if they are federated.

in reply to Yisrael Dov :emacs: :nixos:

@yisraeldov I'm not saying there aren't options outside of Gitlab, I'm saying that Gitlab doesn't have the option.
in reply to Brodie Robertson

Are there any other "forges" that do have the option? I love gitlab BTW, if I didn't make that clear before.
in reply to Brodie Robertson

@yisraeldov yeah.

The fact that @tails does "appointment-only" access to their #SepfHosted #Gitlab prevents me from actually helping and improving #Tails.

Tho Gitlab is propably designed on purpose for that and was never meant to be used as #public solution...

in reply to Brodie Robertson

I love gitlab from a technical standpoint, have been using it for years. Their saas pricing is a joke, basic plan being more expensive than github enterprise. I'm not paying 10x for slightly better features and will move all my shit to github in the future. Rug pull somebody else, thx, bye.
