This new #palmoil tool does not include a single brand from #India #China #Indonesia or #Malaysia, the four largest consumption markets for palm oil, accounting for the majority of demand, and, likely, an even greater percentage of deforestation due to lax due diligence requirements.

We're not going to solve supply chain deforestation by only focusing on global north demand.

The vast majority of palm oil isn't used for human consumption, but for industrial processes. Since we're moving away from petrochemical processes, palm oil is increasingly being used to create bioplastics, biodiesel, biolubricants etc. In fact, reducing palm oil in food causes MORE environmental impact because the palm oil in the food will then be replaced by another vegetable oil that is less efficiently produced and causes more environmental harm. The way to stop the destruction of Indonesian rainforests isn't to ban palm oil from food, it's to stop using (bio)diesel, (bio)lubricants and (bio)plastics.

@MxAlba @palmoildetectives The efficiency/productivity/yield argument is an inaccurate and dangerous #palmoil industry talking point. I did a piece exploring this back in 2021

@palmoildetectives @MxAlba thank you! Appreciate you helping get this out there, and combating the palm oil industry's inaccurate messaging.
