!Friendica Support I had a look at the number of posts that arrive at my servers that are transported via DFRN our legacy protocol. It is not used anymore and there are no servers out there anymore that can't speak AP or the Diaspora protocol. So I really think that we should remove that protocol stack now.

Are there any objections? The benefit would be that there is less code to refactor in our regular refactor cycles.

I think it sounds like a good idea. Removing technical depth is always important.

keine zentralisiert Lösung zuhaben bei malware, Spam etc ist nicht gut - andernfalls kann beim ersten lesen der Gedanke, wenn nun gegebenenfalls viele US Dienste ausfallen oder einfach nicht mehr benutzt werden, dann mit dem Protokoll zumindest eine DE/EU Alternative zu haben, Kommunikation dennoch in kleinen auch für sich existierenden Netzwerk Gruppe funktionieren kann - es schein ja schon die “Freundachaftsanfrage Funktion” zu sein. Um erlich zusein hab ich da wenig bis kein eigenen Wissen

Friendica verwendet ActivityPub und macht damit alles. DFRN war mal unser primäres Protokoll, aber seit mehr als 6 Jahren wird es als primäres Protokoll für die Kommunikation zwischen Friendica-Installationen verwendet.

selbst hab ich wenig coding Erfahrung, kam mal von der Hardware Ecke, daher die Frage; wenn nun mal activityHub kommerziell wird oder sonst bugs aufweist, ist es dann auch wenns eher auf dem abstell Gleis ist, nicht gut die codebase zu DFRN weiter als zwei Option zu haben

was Software angeht hab ich noch wenig Erfahrung, oder eben der verrostete. Bei mir sind es damals zumindest mehr die Hardware Projekte gewesen, daher auch der Wunsch mich wieder fitter zu machen an der badge und damit ein lern Projekt zu haben. Die ist billiger als ein Lilygo Meshgerät und hat einen der neueren trustedcompute Chips verbaut

@Michael 🇺🇦 On my instance, I have reposted many #Diaspora posts and when I search for posts with #DFRN then I find them all. So I guess somehow this old protocol is still being used.

No objections! In fact, it seems like a really great idea: simplifying and streamlining is always advisable.
But, I wonder, will the distribution of outgoing messages based on circles work even without DFRN? And didn't private messages between Friendica users also depend on DFRN? How will they work from now on?
So, what are the things we should give up when we don't have DFRN?

We do everything via ActivityPub. DFRN is only used when the remote server doesn't seem to support ActivityPub. This means that we don't give up anything - except the compatibility with system prior to the end of 2018.
