@HampshireKarin Deforestation for meat agriculture, palm oil and soy taken together accounts for 60% of all global deforestation. Combine this with the fact that megatonnes of palm oil and soy is used in animal feed for industrial agriculture - dairy and meat - the environmental impact of all this is enormous. See cited info for 60% figure - Our World in Data https://ourworldindata.org/what-are-drivers-deforestation

So if people eat meat from grass fed livestock that wouldn’t be doing any harm. People who eat meat from factory farms or which are fed with crops grown in regions where deforestation is occurring would do well to change what they eat, which could be more pulses & occasional grass fed beef or lamb.
Telling meat lovers they must give up all meat is less likely to work than explaining more sustainable choices.

@HampshireKarin "Meat Lovers" are actually just unaware of the methods that ALL animals are killed regardless of what they eat. In the most brutal and horrific way imaginable, the idea that they live some happy life is a disgraceful lie from the meat and dairy industry. So save any claim here that you're an animal lover who eats meat, its pure hypocrisy. In the mean time watch this and perhaps wake up out of the lie you are living in https://www.dominionmovement.com/watch

That’s a very different issue from palm oil and deforestation. I didn’t say I eat meat, by the way. Good detectives don’t jump to conclusions.

@HampshireKarin Oh OK - well you certainly went into bat for "meat lovers" though - that's clear!

@HampshireKarin Also it's not a good idea to compartmentalise environmental issues - meat, palm oil and soy are connected and are ruining the planet through human consumption. This study shows if the world went vegan food-related CO2 emissions may drop by 68 per cent within 15 years, it would also provide the cut in emissions needed to limit global warming to 2ºC. https://news.stanford.edu/2022/02/01/new-model-explores-link-animal-agriculture-climate-change/

“Meat” is not necessarily bad for the environment. Mass produced, intensively farmed meat is a big problem for the environment. Also destruction of habitats for grass monocultures is very bad for the environment. So people should be eating much less meat for the sake of the environment and our wildlife. It’s possible to raise small numbers of livestock in harmony with nature however. I expect most vegans still consume palm oil, so veganism alone is not the answer.

I’ve come across people who think they haven’t had a proper meal if it doesn’t contain meat & I get the impression they are a growing majority as meat becomes more popular in parts of the world where it use to be consumed less. We need to encourage more people to eat a sustainable diet rather than insist people give up meat completely. It’s possible to eat lots of delicious, nutritious & satisfying meals that don’t contain meat. People need encouragement to eat more of them.
