Canonical Keeps Shipping Malware Snaps!! #Linux #YouTube https://youtu.be/kzB6fHL_2Pg

Normally I would be the type commenting on the irrational component to controversial perceptions around the #Snap ecosystem.

But in this case even I would say that #Canonical are bang to rights given the repeat occurrences and the types of mitigation they could have introduced.

If they are only trying to avoid cost or amplifying the fear of it becoming a walled-garden then the current approach is biased too far in the other direction on both counts.

I'm shocked to learn that an idea based on the premise of a constant stream of constantly updated software with no meaningful quality or content control would end up containing malware.

Does Ubuntu still highjack apt install commands and swap out the install to snap? That makes this 10 times worse.

Oh really ? Will they ever learn that nobody will use snaps (by choice) if it's as dangerous as roaming the web for random software ?

I would argue that the AUR is probably a bit safer than the Snap Store because you are given an install script that is completely viewable to the user. Plus auto updates don't happen.

On the other hand, the snap store is very opaque to the user and they don't know what exactly is being installed. Plus auto updates happen without even notifying the user.

Honestly the idea of snaps is decent, but the execution is horrible.
