Tumblr Will Join Mastodon And The Fediverse #Mastodon #Twittertakeover #YouTube https://youtu.be/goHk0aWZhi4

yes, yes, finally, the nail in the coffin for people who say mastodon is confusing because there's no central place, now we can have the best of both worlds.

I don't think that centralizing the protocol into Tumblr for example is good for people. Normies should actually learn the technology they're using, from the basics of how their computer/phone works to the platforms and apps they use and the consequences from using them, instead of just complaining about it being "difficult". Even if there is interoperability which is nice, you are still trapped in the control of the company that's behind that specific platform.

@gianmarcogg03 You can just treat Tumblr like a mega instance, which as can be seen from places like mastodon.social is what naturally happens with a decentralized network. It seems like no matter what you do networks tend to centralize

people still have kind of a superficial way to look at these decentralized platforms (see how most Matrix users just sign up to the official homeserver), that's still a user mistake in my opinion rather than a deficiency in the way this stuff works. The "centralized" aspect you should care about and strive for is federation, which exists to prevent isolation of all servers.

@gianmarcogg03 They likely always will, if you ask a search engine which mastodon instance you should join it's going to always tell you the biggest.

while I admit there is risk (things like potentially adding ads etc) I can't help but like the idea of a bunch of separate sites like tumblr, YouTube, etc all linked through the fediverse

I have doubts that most of these companies would want that, but it would reshape the internet in an interesting way imo

when I first tried to join mastodon, I was gatekept out and decided ykno, "F*** this". This video made me decide to try again. I think the barrier to entry is way too high for most people and it's gonna be to this platform's detriment, but I'm still hopeful for the future of it.
