Beat Saber

Had a delightful #BeatSaber session this evening, and landed on a wonderfully difficult and clever map: tofubeats' "CANDYYYLAND (Pa’s Lam System Remix)", mapped by Saut: bsaber.com/songs/294c/

Here's a very skilled person playing on Expert, the hardest difficulty I beat: youtu.be/3XjdriFOgLk (unrelated: they have wildly low-contrast block arrows! 🤯) The segment starting at 2:48 in that video is so smoothly mapped that I didn't even get tangled up in left-handed mode.

That looks like a satisfying map! Lots of those, uh, kinda... four-block downdownupup bits? alright so every time I wanna try and talk Beat Saber with my mates and praise a specific map section I want there to be terminology for specific pattern parts so we actually know what we're talking about, are there any words for that? Like, is there way people talk that ends up with "Oh aye that map transitions a double Wheaton into a reverse Thrumble via an inverted Taylor"

@ifixcoinops omg, me, too! 😅 I sometimes reference the glossary over at bsmg.wiki/mapping/glossary.htm…, but then I have the problem anyone doing a reverse lookup in a dictionary has: skimming definitions to try to find a matching one. 😂 (The terms are also way more boring than "double Wheaton" and "reverse Thrumble"--they should have consulted you.) I think you might mean the "stream" pattern? But the short bursts of them rather than the long ones that can wreck you if you get off by one.

Ooh yes this is EXACTLY what I was after, thank you! ❤

The pattern I was trying to name/define isn't a stream exactly; it goes rightdown/leftdown/rightup/leftup (or from the left, leftdown/rightdown/leftup/rightup) kinda moving your whole torso-attention from one side of the stage to the other, rolling your arms in a kinda barrel roll. There's a map of "Elements" by Lindsey Stirling that does it a whole lot

@ifixcoinops Yes, those are maybe piano streams? Barrel roll is a better name, imo. It's a really fun pattern, and feels good when you can nail it. I had a very pretty, atmospheric map sit for *months* in my Ex --> E+ struggles because of a fast burst of those in the middle of the song that just knotted my brain up and sometimes clashed my controllers painfully. 😁

Oh! And thank you for reminding me Lindsey Stirling exists! Some good-looking maps of her stuff out there. 💃🏾
