Seeing Mage using "ricing"(racist slang pointed at japanese car modders) makes me feel a bit uneasy, it's not a word I love to see thrown around on the timeline. Maybe she could call them modders 🌻

@neauoire the not-so-distant future of the techno-mage will not be racist.

Thank you for educating me on the finer details of our current time-line evils.

she wouldn't know the etymology, but fish probably would. teaching opportunity both about that specific word and the near-ubiquity of casual racism in IT

@khm that's neat idea, I would love to see Fish and Mage have this conversation.

I was always wondering about the etymology: the relation between UI customisation and rice is as far from obvious as it can possibly be, and as a non-American I wasn't aware of that. The etymology is indeed… questionable, but is it still racist when it got adopted in an unrelated field by wider audience, not used in a derogatory manner and not targeted at particular ethnicity? 🤔

It depends, if you're accidentally using a word and not knowing where it comes from, it's different than knowing its history and choosing to use it anyways, which in this specific case, as a white person, I'd be weary of reclaiming ethnic slurs affecting a demographic that I am not part of. So, I'm not really the person to ask.
