I was wondering, could someone get the transcript from this video? With some automated tool or something? I don't mind cleaning it up after, but I'd like to have a textual copy of this.

It seems that youtube-dl can do this.

Oh, yes, I wasn't aware of slides (I've not yet seen the video), but an OCR is easier to be found.

Hey Devine, Vimeo does do auto-captioning but we've disabled it because it's such poor quality. Abner has had captions written for some videos, though, so I'll check if he means to do this for these ones, and let him know you'd like a textual copy.

Aww, nargh, I reckon you speak English beautifully! These auto-things just seem to struggle with everything.

By the way, I struggled to find a reference for Machine Forth for this timestamp: https://guide.handmade-seattle.com/c/2022/weathering-software-winter/#2114

The one I landed one was: http://www.ultratechnology.com/mfp21.htm

Is this the best place to direct people, do you reckon, or do you know of a better one?

@miblo yep! that's the right page for it. It's quite a poorly documented project. It's cool that you went around looking for all the different things I mentioned. I was wondering who collected these annotations, some of that stuff is kind of obscure.
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

Oh perfect! Cheers, yeah, I try and index these videos as helpfully as I can. (By the way, you may find our names, and Abner's, in the Credits menu. Keyboard hotkey is 'c'.)
in reply to Matt Mascarenhas

@miblo if Abner doesn't have textual transcript @rek might be able to do it. There has been a lot of attention to this talk and we think it might be well worth the trouble to write it by hand otherwise. Let us know what he says
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

@rek Oooh cool, okay! I'll put Rek's name forward and, yep, will surely let you know.
in reply to Matt Mascarenhas

@rek Hiya folks, Abner has had an auto-transcript made by Rev (https://www.rev.com/), which we can actually edit and re-download via a URL! Rekka, do you have a preferred way for me to send you the link privately? (Maybe DM here, email?)

@klardotsh @miblo I rewatched the part of the talk last night where I poke fun at zig boostrapping to see if it was as funny as I remembered it, and it was, I was relieved ;)
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

@klardotsh @miblo (I was only hoping that it didn't come out as straight up mean, that could have not landed well)

@kategenevieve Oh wow! Well, that might be better than starting off from scratch 😀 Thanks for this you might have saved us a bunch of time. cc @rek https://paste.sr.ht/~rabbits/de0bb2adaa20b85ffb3935b5aae3cdb0c56dfc47

@rek Glad it can help you. If you copy & delete the content out, the pad will delete in a day.

tho your talk reminds me to keep suspicious of these cloud tools & notice the tradeoffs 😀

Just reading this article https://www.theverge.com/2022/2/16/22937766/go-read-this-otter-ai-transcription-data-privacy-report & noticing how much the networks I work with have become reliant on auto transcription - particularly for transcribing conversations with cultural workers & human rights activists.
in reply to kategenevieve

@kategenevieve @rek I've made a copy of the content. I had never used something like this, we were ready to doing it by hand, and looking at the transcript, it'll have to be heavily edited anyways.

I hope covid doesn't kick your butt too much, feel better 😀
