It looks like the former place of the oven, right? Did you take it off definitely, or it's somewhere else in the boat now?
in reply to Artsun

@artsun we took it off, and we'll replace it by a single gimbaled burner.

Oh cool! Quite interested by the whys and the hows when and if you'll feel like sharing the story!

@artsun the story is quite simple, we had a 3 burner stove+oven. We never used the over in 9 years, and only ever used 1 burner, so we figured we might as well use that space for something useful 😀
in reply to Artsun

@artsun the space there is prime real estate, it's so nice to have all that extra space to keep our veggie bins

there isn't any lips on the picture, we haven't started working on the doors, the picture only shows the bottom one(opened). We wouldn't go off at sea like this XD

@klardotsh haha yeah no, we only got started on the basic structure today, it's unvarnished, unsecured.. There's quite a way to go before this is practical.

Started staining the pine shelves with instant coffee. You can see the difference in color after a single pass of coffee stain.

We recycled parts from older projects to make stoppers so when the boat is heeling, things don't fly off.

Looks great! How many passes of coffee varnish do you apply in total? And do you put on a finishing coat of something else to make it more durable or is it just coffee?
in reply to rostiger

@rostiger we put two coats of coffee , and then two coats of varnish

Also I've always struggled cutting out parts like the middle piece of the U. Do you use a specific tool for the purpose or do you do it the dumb way like I do it? That is, making tons of tight parallel cuts until the material disintegrates, haha :thisisfine:
in reply to rostiger

@rostiger you drill the file hole, and then hacksaw from the edge until you meet with the edges of the hole
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

I use a round file to help clean out the bottom(inside) of the U, because its tough to align the parallel vertical cuts with the edges of the drilled hole 😛 (i have a tendency to saw at an angle apparently).

Photos don't show it but it's not at all perfect, sanding down the edges helps to mask imperfections.

When I see your projects it makes me want to buy a boat and work on it!

New pantry is complete. Stained pine with instant coffee, it blends well with the rest of the woodwork 😀

This project allows us to keep vegetables in a way so that they breathe well, and is accessible while we're cooking. I'm so glad we finally got around to it.
