perhaps a naive question, but are there any up to date guides to getting/using uxn. Say, with the new OS additions. I felt foolish the other day, wasn’t sure which repo to clone or how to really start
in reply to slewis

Depends what you want to do.

The best way to get started with uxn is reading the uxn tutorial: https://compudanzas.net/uxn_tutorial_day_1.html

As well as the uxntal docs: https://wiki.xxiivv.com/site/uxntal.html

And the Varvara docs: https://wiki.xxiivv.com/site/varvara.html

For the OS, that's a whole different thing, also, it's very bleeding edge, you need to be familiar with the first link before diving into porporo.

thank you for this. The trouble at the moment is I don’t really know what I want to do or start with. But I do know I want to start!
I’m just fascinated with it all, all that you do and create with/within uxn
in reply to slewis

@slew One of the first projects I did with uxn is write my wiki engine in it. Then am illustration program, try to find a task that could be well suited for uxn and go with that 😀

I’ll start with something real small. Never worked with a stack based language before, it’s a perfect chance to learn!

@compudanzas's tutorial is a good place to start then, it goes through the basics in detail 😀 I'm always around if you need a hand with anything, or if something is unclear.

@slew
I also found it less helpful as it assumed a background in forth, while my background has more x86 assembly...
in reply to DHeadshot's Alt

@ddlyh @slew it does? I thought it starts pretty much from the basics. Was something unclear?

@AlgoCompSynth I haven't seen this thread, do you mean that I should watch the talk that someone mentions in the comments, or the thing about critical software in particular?

Devine Lu Linvega
I don't know much about critical software architecture, and the problems of C mentioned in there. My usage of C is extremely superficial.

@AlgoCompSynth I've written a lot more, but the scale of projects I use it for are quite benign haha

I remember sitting in front of the computer as a kid (with no real skills whatsoever, just getting those first pixels to who up) wondering how the heck you'd get snowy pixels to accumulate... if will always feels like a magical thing to me! 😍
in reply to Lovebyte Demoparty

@lovebyteparty I remember the first time I saw world of sand and it felt like computers could do pure magic 😁
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

oooh a super cool 00s thing I didn't know about, thank you! You mean *this* world of sand right? I can imagine!
in reply to Devine Lu Linvega

Oooh, cool and interesting. 🤩 Pinging @dave84 to consider. It could e.g. be an extension of the current "snow" exercises.
