Automatically transferring the 2-bit assets for Oquonie, to 1-bit, made some of the characters and tiles too hard to read visually, so @rek reworked the assets to work perfectly on monochromatic screens.

This gives the game a very nice look. We'll have a #playdate build with the new assets shortly 😀 Just gotta finish hooking up the soundtrack.

You know what's neat? Having a single binary and being able to run it on a NDS, on Linux, or Plan 9, or a Playdate, even in the browser.

Java sobbing in a corner somewhere, wondering what went so wrong.

*exciting* do you have a specific build for 1bit assets ? Or does it select them on the fly ?

@mario_afk We made a oquonie-mono.rom, I didn't want to store twice the assets, it's unlikely that people will swap color depth in-game.

I've put all the files in the resources as ADPCM, and I'm triggering them via upon entering a new section of the world via pd->sound->fileplayer by calling a port in the 0xf device. I'm adding fadein/fadeout transitions atm.

oh got it -- so you'll have a platform-specific device for playing files. nice! @rek

@d6 If it helps, rolling your own audio thing is not that complicated, here is the one from Owlets Embrace (really nice C codebase).

He is using https://qoaformat.org/ for audio format. He started with ADPCM but went in to a rabbit whole and ended up liking QOA better, he posted his whole process on the Playdates Squad Discord server.

I was hoping a playdate build was what you were up to!!

Can’t wait to re-visit that place.

@damaru it already works! 😀

Occasionally I compare projects to games, in terms of enjoyment potential. I enjoy playing games and I enjoy doing projects; I enjoy watching others play games and I enjoy watching others do projects.

I get a lot of joy from playing Oquonie. I got a ton of joy contributing to Oquonie! But what else on Earth compares to the joy I get from watching you build and refine it? 🌟

(I don't recommend attempting 0-bit assets though)

(enjoyment potential is measured in kilojoyles, which is equal to one kilowatt•smile)

@rezmason we're attempting to demake our games into oblivion, 0bit is in the pipeline.

Just don't bit off less than I can view

... Not my best. 😆
