Autumn is just around the corner, and when the leaves begin to fall, it will have been four years since the early sketches of a personal computing system which became #Uxn. I thought it would be interesting to look back and see what has happened since.

@tty I'm glad you enjoyed it ^__^ rek did proof reading because ooof, the first draft was a tangled up mess!

@tty I haven't, but this is a model example of how to do it right. I love the resources on there.

Re: what are computers for, anyway?

It may be the only example I will ever think of, but I find celestial navigation at sea to be a really cool example of computers being used independently to solve an immediate problem. To store star catalogues digitally, to quickly reduce a time sight, to keep time in an accurate manner using a quartz oscillator... It's a nice cocktail of features that are all really important to a celestial navigator! Sure, GPS exists, but it's just not the same...

I don’t think I’ve ever felt “moved” by a programming language. But I find the ethos behind UXN moving. It’s maybe my own projecting since I’ve only recently learned about UXN and you + Rek’s journey aboard Pino; but I feel like there is something about your search for beauty (in its hundreds of definitions) directing its creation. If that’s the case, then it’s art to me.

I am happy you wrote this post and Mastodon gladly showed me it. I encountered 100 Rabbits a while ago: a very aesthetic website, a blog about living on a boat, weird OS, and the best-looking apps I've ever seen. - I never knew what to make of it. Every time I stumble upon software from you or 100rabbits I was screaming internally "what is it for?!" - at the same time being completely in awe for the look and hard work you had to put in it...

…This post clarified a bit finally for me what is UXN and why was it created. I have to say I still don't understand the purpose and goal of it, but I love it nevertheless and I hope you will create more. I am eagerly waiting to again stumble upon one of your future projects and the confusing feeling it always brings for me.

@FIKAMA If you'd like maybe I can explain other words? I tried to make the post as clear I could make it but maybe it's actually not that easy to grasp, I'd love to try to rephrase it so it's more approachable

Read this after it was linked in the newsletter, really love this retrospective of such a special project!

@noelle cheers Noelle, I'm glad : ) I'll make another one in 4 years.
