This product reminds me of the old David Firth cartoon Burnt Face Man. "I may be an amazon product, but that hasn't affected my ability to fight crime!"
This video is interesting given the new developments around Verkada's security breach #InternetOfCrap #IPCameras.
It's also something that this device itself wasn't built down to a cost. In fact the design could have been made more efficient and cheaper to manufacture without reducing quality. I get vibes from the number of module boards that they minimised engineering time and costs by doing as little as possible to make a prototype PoC unit into a saleable product quickly. Then they get "first mover advantage" and revenue to make a rev2.
This "rush to market" probably affects software quality too, hence the terrible security breaches like this most recent one.
One of my neighbours has a Ring and its red LED comes on most times I pass by it in the hallway >.> The frustrating thing is that in Germany they don't _yet_ share recordings with the cops and lots of people's reaction is "oh well in the US they do all sorts of things that aren't legal here", not seeing how the trend is generally that the US is ahead of Germany by ~5 years, but the same legislative lobbying works here too, just with a bit of delay.
Here in The Netherlands it's forbidden to film the public space with a fixed camera for privacy reasons(art. 441b criminal justice, max two month of jail time), but our police is stimulating the usage and registration of these devices to have them available for little advantage, thus obviously don't give a crap unless they are forced to... So if you make an issue out of it you can have one or two removed, but with the current Amacraps and associates marketing mills running uninterrupted for quite some years now, that will be a major challenge. With this country being densely populated, you can't have a fucking walk in some random street anymore without being surveilled by some put it in the trash cam, since most doors are facing the streets. Not to mention this next level crap they are in to https://threatpost.com/amazon-sidewalk-to-sweep-you-into-its-mesh/166581/
