I have worked for 6 years (2000-2006) at MandrakeSoft/Mandriva in Paris, and my very first task was switching from LPD (Line Printer Daemon, line printers are kind of high-speed electric typewriters) to #CUPS and so Mandrake was the first distro with CUPS and easy printing.

So whatever Mandrake version was released in fall of 2000 was the first ever Linux distro on the world which used CUPS.

And that was the foundation of #OpenPrinting !

Thanks Brodie, I love this video! From the good old times a few years into working at #Canonical. #CUPS already used by every distro for several years, but not all apps sent jobs in PDF format yet, several, like OpenOffice (predecessor of #LibreOffice) still sent PostScript, standard of old #Unix times. And printers still needed drivers and some manufacturers made (usually closed-source) ones, and everyone with an integration more awkward than the other ...
