A plot showing the wall time required to integrate the solar system for 5 Gyr. The y scale is logarithmic and ranges from 1 day to over a million years. The x scale is linear from 1950 to 2023. Over time, N-body simulation become more efficient. The scaling is roughly exponential. Also shown is how the time for one CPU cycle dropped from 1 microsecond to under 1 nanosecond (Moore's law) between 1970 and 2000. Since 2000 CPU cycles do not get shorter anymore. The bottom right data point is for WHFast512 (Javaheri, Rein & Tamayo 2023) showing a wall time of only 1 day.
