Hi friends, I’m hoping someone here may be able to help…

I have just one copy of my 2011 book, The Science of Kissing, published in Japanese. I would like to buy another to share with a friend in Japan, and do not know how to find it.

Mastodon has proven a very smart community, and I’d appreciate any guidance to point me in the right direction? Thank you. #books

Sometimes I think my #solarpunk ideas are very original. Decentralized countries. 3D printers manufacturing anything. Biophotovaltic panels that grow in backyards to power homes. And then I read an article like this and I remember that a lot of other writers like me are reacting to our present dilemmas and troubles, and we probably grew up on the same kind of scifi stories so we most likely end up with the same solutions. See #books to read inside.

I wanted to love "Beautyland" by Marie-Helene Bertino - a neurodiverse protagonist who loves science(!) - but it didn't quite live up to my expectations.

But now I'm 11 chapters into "Circe" by Madeline Miller, which has been a wonderful journey so far. Miller knows her Classics! Highly recommend 📚 #books

This is the worst review for my book on Amazon. All things considered, it's not too terrible.

I do hope the reader eventually found my book. amazon.com/Science-Kissing-Wha… #books

Invisible Friends had just been published in paperback.

inquisitivebiologist.com/2023/…

An optimistic and hopeful romp through microbiology, this book encourages readers to rethink their relationship with nature, though gets starry-eyed in places.

Beatrix Potter is best remembered for her charming tales of Peter Rabbit, but did you know she also studied #science?

Potter collected & examined beetles, butterflies, plants, bird eggs, shells, rocks, fossils & especially fungi. She conducted experiments & wrote a scientific paper with her own illustrations, presented at the Linnean Society of London. However, as a woman in the Victorian era, she couldn’t even attend the meeting.#history #art #books

"A scientist worthy of the name, above all a mathematician, experiences in his work the same impression as an artist; his pleasure is as great and of the same nature. "

David Navarro and Martyna Sobecka have traveled the width and breadth of Eastern Europe, photographing the region’s unique brutalist architecture. "Eastern Blocks II," the duo's new book, captures some of these stark scenes.

In September 2024, Hurricane Helene roared into western North Carolina. Record-breaking winds, rain & floods damaged & destroyed homes, businesses, roads & forests across the region.

Over two dozen of the area’s best writers & artists contributed to “Stronger than the Storm” & all profits benefit local recovery efforts.

My copy just arrived & I encourage you to support the communities hit hardest by the Helene. a.co/d/9BeCdKn #science #books

Would highly recommend Every Living Thing by Jason Roberts - wonderful dual biography of Linnaeus and Buffon. Many fascinating anecdotes about both - especially Linnaeus, who was a bit of a character.

AUDIOVISUAL DISRUPTION proposes to dismantle the apparatus of audiovisual media arts and rethink it from a post-digital perspective based on hybridisation. Post-digital aesthetics are grounded in impure aesthetics that exploit the effects of digital computational systems as they deeply permeate all parts of contemporary life. It concludes with a series of artworks critical to the material, sociocultural and environmental consequences of digital technology.

#OTD in 1726.

The novel Gulliver's Travels written by Jonathan Swift satirising both human nature and the "travellers' tales" literary subgenre is published. Swift claimed that he wrote it "to vex the world rather than divert it".

I spent some time last year cataloging my late parents' books (LibraryThing) with plans to give away, sell, or donate those my brother and I aren't interested in reading.

The cataloging part went fine, but...

I went to a book swap Wednesday and donated two books, the maximum allowed.

I took home four books.

Sigh!

While reading “The Ministry for the Future” by Kim Stanley Robinson, I find myself wondering if this book should be required reading at #COP28

The story is fiction, of course. But it’s also highly informed & quite believable (so far). And it’s set in the not too distant future. #books #ClimateChange
