We started the year with fewer than 5,000 confirmed exoplanets. We end with 5,235 known worlds. About 4% are rocky planets like Earth or Mars. What will the new bring? More planets! exoplanets.nasa.gov

"About 4% are rocky planets like Earth or Mars"
Considering >70% of Earth is covered by water, why r we labeling it as a rocky planet?

We do know a lot about how star and planets become to being, but we know nothing about how planets become suitable for life to develop. Considering the age of the universe is perfectly possible that super developed intelligent beings have the technology to move planets around within a star system to make one suitable for life

There is an exoplanet less reflective than coal. It's the darkest planet ever discovered orbiting a star, and its atmosphere is hotter than lava! It would incinerate any stocking it found itself in. Happy holidays from your exoplanet friends!

Happy launchiversary, @NASAWebb!

Great website describing the launch.
jwst.nasa.gov/content/about/la…

The James Webb Space Telescope was launched on an Ariane 5 rocket. Webb was launched from Arianespace's ELA-3 launch complex at Europe's Spaceport located near Kourou, French Guiana.

It is beneficial for launch sites to be located near the equator - the spin of the Earth can help give an additional push. The surface of the Earth at the equator is moving at 1670 km/hr.

One year ago today, @NASAWebb launched and lifted all of us. We're thankful for the science and look forward to discoveries to come, but in this moment, we are grateful for the wonder that Webb provided with every image and observation. We're glad you're here with us.

The James Webb Telescope is a marvel of engineering and execution, and it will surely continue to yield incredible data for astrophysics for a long time to come. Happy anniversary, JWT!

Earthrise.

On Christmas Eve of 1968, the Apollo 8 crew photographed Earth rising over the lunar surface as they orbited the Moon.

Yes, and I want to pull an Edgar Mitchell on every single politician who doesn't care about the Earth or her people: Grab them by the scruff of the neck, take them out a quarter million miles, and say "LOOK AT THAT, you [saxon epithet].

I understand it's had an Effect on every single person who's been up.

"We came all this way to explore the Moon, and the most important thing is that we discovered the Earth" –Bill Anders, Apollo 8 astronaut

Gotta admit, I still get choked up every time I see "Earthrise." Kind of a "there's no place like home" vibe ... with the realization that it is humankind's ONLY home right now, and how precious it is.

On Nov. 28, our Orion spacecraft captured the Earth rising behind the Moon.
